The location of the Galle stadium is particularly beautiful as it surrounded on two sides by the Indian Ocean. It is an old stadium built in the year 1876 & currently has a capacity of 35,000 spectators. In the 2005 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the stadium was badly damaged & was literally rendered inoperable. But it was brought back to life after a through rebuilding was undertaken by the authorities.
The first test match at Galle was held in 1998 between Sri Lanka & New Zealand. The first ODI at this ground happened a year later in 1999 between Sri Lanka & India. The ground has always been a favorite of the home team as they have won six out of the 11 test matches that have been played here with only two defeats.
