By Hitesh Jain on Apr 7, 2021

In the game of cricket, expecting a lot of runs from the tail end players is a bit unfair because actually, their main skill is bowling but in the history of Test cricket, there are lots of great innings played for the 8th wicket in pairs. When a team has a deep batting lineup then its 9th number player can also perform. Players like Stuart Broad, James Franklin, Jack Gregory, Anil Kumble, Shaun Pollock, and many more are good batsmen also and scored great partnership. The highest 8th wicket partnership in Test cricket is 332 runs added by Jonathan Trott and Stuart Broad against Pakistan at Lord’s on 26 Aug 2010. Stuart Broad, who is known for his seam bowling, struck 169 runs in that match that helped England to win the match by an innings and 225 runs.

The second highest 8th wicket partnership is 313 runs scored by Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq against Zimbabwe at Sheikhupura on 17 Oct 1996. Wasim Akram played a phenomenal inning of 257 runs in that match. Saqlain Mushtaq also supported well and spent time on the crease and also made 78 runs. The third-highest partnership for the 8th wicket is 256 runs and scored by Stephen Fleming and James Franklin against South Africa at Cape Town on 27 Apr 2006. Stephen Fleming, the captain of the NZ Team, struck a double century, and James Franklin was also awesome with his unbeaten 122 runs.

For India, the highest 8th wicket partnership in Test cricket is 241 added by Virat Kohli and Jayant Yadav against England at Mumbai on 8 Dec 2016. Virat was awesome in that match and contributed valuable 235 runs. Jayant Yadav also batted and supported well and struck a century in that match. India won that match by 36 runs. England and Pakistan is the only team who scored more than 300 runs for the 8th wicket in Test cricket. New Zealand and England two times, Australia, India, and West Indies one time has added 200+ total for the 8th wicket partnership in Test cricket.
