Highest 6th Wicket Partnership in Test
In International Test Cricket, the batsman at the number 7 position is mostly an all-rounder who can bat and ball as well whenever required. He also has the capability to play under pressure and make huge runs. It has happened in the past record of test matches. For example, Ravi Shastri, Yuvraj Singh, Robin Singh, Andrew Flintoff, Arjuna Ranatunga, Abdul Razzaq, Kapil Dev, are all able to turn the match anytime with bat and ball. The highest 6th wicket partnership in Test cricket is 399 runs made by Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow against South Africa at Cape Town on 2 Jan 2016. Ben Stokes struck a double century and Jonny Bairstow contributed 150 runs in that match that helped them to reach a total of 629. Ben Stokes was also named Man of the Match for his all-around performance. That is the benefit of having an all-rounder in the team. The second highest 6th wicket partnership is unbeaten 365 runs scored by New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and BJ Watling against Sri Lanka at Wellington on 3 Jan 2015.
The 3rd highest partnership for the 6th wicket is also scored by New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum and BJ Watling. BJ Watling was impressive in that match and struck a century in both innings. It has been found that 8 times 300+ runs have been scored by the teams for the 6th wicket. Australia and New Zealand both achieved 300+ runs for the 6th wicket partnership, and England & Sri Lank have achieved this feat once in test cricket.
For India, the highest 6th wicket partnership in test cricket is unbeaten 298 runs scored by Dilip Vengsarkar and Ravi Shastri against Australia at Mumbai on 15 Oct 1986. The Indian team has never been able to knock 300+ runs for the 6th wicket in test cricket. There are 8 times when the Indian team has scored more than 200 runs. The first 200+ runs for India for the 6th wicket was made by Dilip Vengsarkar and Ravi Shastri in 1986.
Let’s hope the Indian team will also be included in the 300+ runs club for the 6th wicket partnership in the coming future.
