Highest 5th Wicket Partnership in Test
In test cricket, when a team loses its 4 wickets very early then the whole team comes under pressure. Then the responsibility increases for the 6th position player and he has to play sensible cricket under pressure. It has been found that many times a team has put a big total for the 5th wicket even after losing 4 wickets very early. Players like Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, Mushfiqur Rahim, AB de Villiers, Jos Butler, Mike Hussey, Ricky Ponting, VVS Laxman have performed well under pressure and scored more than 300 runs for the 5th wicket partnership. The highest 5th wicket partnership in a Test is 405 runs scored by Sid Barnes and Donald Bradman against England at Sydney on 13 Dec 1946. Because of their partnership, Australia won that match by an inning and 33 runs. Both Sid Barnes and Don Bradman struck 234 runs each that helped the team to reach a total of 659 runs.
The second highest 5th wicket partnership is 385 runs and it was again made by Australia’s Steve Waugh and Greg Blewett against South Africa at Johannesburg on 28 Feb 1997. Indian batsmen VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid scored the third-highest 5th wicket partnership in test cricket against Australia at Kolkata on 11 Mar 2001. It is interesting to know that India was bowled out at 171 only and trailed by 264 runs but the sensational performance from Laxman and Dravid dominated the Australian team and won the match by 171 runs.
The 4th highest partnership for the 5th wicket was made by Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim against New Zealand at their home ground Wellington on 12 Jan 2017.
There have been 12 times when a team has scored 300 or more runs for the 5th wicket. First of all, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid made 300+ runs for India and it was the highest 5th wicket total for India. Australia has made 5 times 300+ runs for 5th wicket, India 3 times, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, and West Indies only one time in the history of Test cricket.
