Highest 4th Wicket Partnership in Test
The batsman at the number 5 position generally belongs to the middle order of the team. The Middle-order batsman plays a key role when a team loses wickets at the starting. The 4th wicket partnership becomes very crucial for a team when its top order fails to give a good start. The batsman who comes to bat at the number 5 position should be technical and mentally fit to handle the pressure in such a condition. There are many instances when middle-order batsmen have supported the team in critical conditions. Some of these players are Shaun Marsh, Donald Bradman, VVS Laxman, Saleem Malik, AB de Villiers. All of them have already scored more than 300 runs for the 4th wicket partnership. The highest 4th wicket partnership in Test cricket is 449 runs added by Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh against West Indies at Hobart on 10 Dec 2015. The second-highest partnership for the 4th wicket is 437 runs scored by Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera against Pakistan at Karachi on 21 Feb 2009. Third-time 400+ runs for the 4th wicket was scored by England's Peter May and Doug Insole against West Indies at Birmingham on 30 May 1957.
For India, the highest 4th wicket partnership is 365 runs scored by Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane against New Zealand at Indore on 8 Oct 2016. In that match, India had already lost 2 quick wickets and the top order was demolished, India was 100-3. Virat Kohli handled it and struck a double century and Rahane also made 188 runs that helped India to register a victory by 321. In the history of test cricket, the Indian team has scored 2 times 300 plus runs for the 4th wicket partnership. First of all, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman made 300+ runs for the 4th wicket in 2004, and then after 12 years that record was broken by Kohli and Rahane in 2016. There have been 15 times when a team made 300+ runs in which Australia 6 times, Pakistan & India 2 times, West Indies, New Zealand, South Africa, England, and Afghanistan 1 time.
