Highest 3rd Wicket Partnership in Test

By Hitesh Jain on Apr 6, 2021

The batsman at the number position belongs to the Top Order in the batting lineup of a cricket team. The 3rd wicket partnership plays a crucial role in test cricket when any team loses two early wickets. Test cricket is a game of patience, tolerance, and self-restraint for both batsmen and bowlers. A team often wants its top-order batsmen to perform well whenever it is required in order to put a big total on the scoreboard. There are many batsmen who have helped their team in critical condition and added a big partnership for the 3rd wicket. Some of them are Hashim Amla, Mahela Jayawardene, Aravinda de Silva, Javed Miandad, Kevin Pietersen, Mohammad Yousuf, Inzamam-ul-Haq, SR Tendulkar. They have batted at the number 4 position in Test cricket and scored great partnerships in pairs. The highest 3rd wicket partnership in Test cricket is 624 runs scored by Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene against South Africa at Colombo (SSC) on 27 Jul 2006.

There have been 28 times when a team has scored 300 or more runs for the 3rd wicket in the history of test matches. The first-ever 300+ runs for the 3rd wicket was added by South Africa's Alan Melville and Dudley Nourse against England on 7 Jun 1947. For India, the highest 3rd wicket partnership in test cricket is 336 runs made by Virendra Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar against Pakistan at Multan on 28 Mar 2004. For India, Dilip Vengsarkar and Gundappa Viswanath struck the first 300+ runs for the 3rd wicket partnership against England in 1982. After 22 years, Sachin Tendulkar and Virendra Sehwag made a total of 300+ runs the second time as a 3rd wicket partnership for India.

Pakistan is at the top of the list by scoring 7 times 300+ runs for the 3rd wicket, then South Africa 6 times, England & West Indies 4 times, India 3 times, Sri Lanka 2 times, New Zealand & Australia 1 time. Bangladesh has never achieved this accomplishment of 300 runs for 3rd wicket partnership.
