Highest 9th Wicket Partnership in ODI
In One Day International cricket, the player who bats at the number 10 position is not often a good batter, so it will be unfair to expect big runs from a lower order player when the top and middle-order batsmen failed to make big runs. Every team keeps their main bowlers at the 10th position and they also do not get enough time or balls to play for long. So, it is difficult to make a high-scoring partnership for the 10th wicket. But there are some instances where it has been proved wrong and players at the 10 positions made runs in pairs. Some of them are Lasith Malinga, Syed Kirmani, Irfan Pathan, RP Singh, Mashrafe Mortaza, Zaheer Khan. These players have already made 100+ runs partnership with their partner for the 9th wicket. The highest 9th wicket partnership in ODI is 132 runs, scored by Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga against a tough opposition i.e, Australia at Melbourne on 3 Nov 2010. Malinga struck a match-winning inning in that match and they won by 1 wicket.
There are 8 times when a team has added 100+ runs for the 9th wicket in the history of ODI cricket. India has done this feat 4 times and the first 100+ runs partnership for the 9th wicket for India was made by Kapil Dev and Syed Kirmani against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells on 18 Jun 1983. They scored unbeaten 126 runs on the scoreboard for the 9th wicket and that is the highest 9th wicket partnership in ODI for India. Then after a long wait of 22 years, Jai Prakash Yadav and Irfan Pathan added 100+ runs for the 9th wicket.
India 4 times and Sri Lanka, Australia, Africa XI, and England have added 100+ for the 9th wicket only one time in the past record of ODI. Bangladesh, South Africa, West Indies, Pakistan, and New Zealand have never been able to score 100+ total for the 9th wicket.
The highest 9th wicket partnership of Bangladesh is 97 runs against Pakistan at Multan on 16 Apr 2008. For South Africa, the highest partnership for the 9th wicket is 95 runs against England at The Oval on 19 Jun 2013. For Pakistan, Sarfraz Ahmed, and Hasan Ali scored 90 runs as the highest 9th wicket partnership against South Africa.
