Highest 3rd Wicket Partnership in ODI
It has been said for a long time that cricket is the game of batsmen and most of the cricket rules are made in the favor of batsmen. In ODI, when a team loses early two wickets then the role of the number 4 batsmen becomes vital. In the game of cricket, batsmen make runs in pairs as a partnership whether they are chasing or batting first. When any top-order batsman makes runs with the batter at the fourth position after losing the first two wickets early then it is called 3rd wicket partnership. Batsmen like Denesh Ramdin, Rilee Rossouw, AB de Villiers, Allan Border, Younis Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Mahela Jayawardene, and many more have batted at 4th position and scored a big partnership for the 3rd wicket in ODI in the past. The 3rd wicket partnership provides strength to the lower middle order to add more and more runs in the death overs for a big total. There are 34 times a team has scored 200+ runs as a partnership for the 3rd wicket in the past record of ODI.
The highest 3rd wicket partnership in ODI is 258 runs scored by West Indies batter Darren Bravo and Denesh Ramdin against Bangladesh at Basseterre on 25 Aug 2014. West Indies had lost both openers at a low score of 12 runs only, then Bravo and Ramdin handled the situation and added 258 for the 3rd wicket that helped them to reach a big total of 338 runs. The second-highest partnership for the 3rd wicket is 247 runs made by South Africa’s batsmen Hashim Amla and Rilee Rossouw against West Indies at Centurion on 28 Jan 2015.
For India, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid have scored unbeaten 247 as the highest 3rd wicket partnership in the history of One Day International against Kenya at Bristol on 23 May 1999 and that was the first time India achieved the accomplishment of 200+ runs for the 3rd wicket. After 6 years in 2005, Indian batsmen Virendra Sehwag and Rahul Dravid again struck 200+ for the 3rd wicket against Pakistan at Kochi.
India has made 200+ runs 9 times for the third wicket, Pakistan 6 times, South Africa & Australia 4 times, Sri Lanka 3 times, England 2 times, and West Indies 1 time. Bangladesh has never been able to achieve this feat. For Bangladesh, the highest partnership for the 3rd wicket is 178 runs scored by Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim against Pakistan at Dhaka on 17 Apr 2015.
