Being the captain of a side which still has three former captains and youngsters as well is definitely not a task which every cricketer would want to fulfil. Angelo Matthews has been in this situation as Sri Lankan cricket’s team captain while Mahela Jayewardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tilakratne Dilshan are still around and going strong. However, it is the support of these veterans along with the enthusiasm of his young teammates as Sri Lankan team managed to win their first series under Matthews’ captaincy.

South Africa looked vulnerable as many of their cricketers were going through injury. Nevertheless, the number one Test Side in ICC’s ranking, South Africa is always a force which could not be underestimated. However, the brilliance which Sri Lankan team showed, especially their battling line up, overwhelmed any and every competition which the visiting South African team could possess. Tilakratne Dilshan struck form in the last two ODIs as he fetched a century in 4th ODI and fell painfully short by 1 run from his century in 5th ODI. Kumar Sangakkara was the star of the Sri Lankan batting throughout the series with his flamboyant batting.

The southpaw was awarded Man of the Series for his unrivalled batting contribution for the winning cause of Sri Lanka in the series. Angelo Matthews showered praise on his team and the support and guidance which former captains have rendered, enabling the 4-1 win over South Africa. South Africa will now face Sri Lanka  in two T20 matches following the ODI series.
