South African cricket history has had been on the murkier side as far as their record on Sri Lankan soil against Sri Lanka is considered. While visiting for a bilateral series against Sri Lanka, South Africa looked vulnerable as they were pestered with injuries to many of their prime players. This gave rise to the conception that their Sri Lankan jinx would get prolonged. The first two ODIs cemented this belief as Sri Lanka empowered over South Africa with ease. However, the third ODI seemed to have brought some much needed relief to the South African side as they won the match and kept the series alive.

Batting first South Africa, they got off to a steady start, rather slow. Captain AB de Villiers struggled to reach his unbeaten score of 47 in 108 balls. The onus fell on the late middle order of South African team. David Miller stepped up to the responsibility and given the circumstances, his innings of 85 runs from 91 deliveries seemed to be a blitzkrieg. The target of 224 runs seemed competitive but not overwhelming even in the given bowling aiding conditions for the good form of the Sri Lankan batting line up.

However, Tsotsobe with his quick 3 wickets within no time ensured that Sri Lanka never got into the chase. Sri Lanka fell short by 56 runs in spite of a Peterson over which was met with a barrage of 35 runs by Perera. Miller received the Man of the Match award.
