It seems that the South African side is going through a lot of bad luck, after reaching what many considered as the pinnacle of South African cricket. The Champions Trophy extended the injury list for the South African side with their pace spearhead Dale Steyn oscillating in and out of the side and Morne Morkel eliminated for over one month. Graeme Smith had not even represented South Africa in the Champions Trophy and with the latest injury of Hashim Amla, the South African side was handed their 11th consecutive loss in the island country of Sri Lanka against the home side.

After the prolific performance of Sri Lankan side in the first ODI match, the second ODI match turned out to be somewhat of a dampener as the rain played spoilsport. The match was decided by Duckworth Lewis method. Sri Lanka batted first and posted a modest, yet competitive under circumstances, target of 224 runs for the South Africans to fetch in their 50 over. The South African innings stumbled in their early phase and they reached 104 runs in 21 over.

The scoring of the South African side was at a fair pace; however they lost half their side in their endeavour. This would definitely have weighed against them when the results were calculated by the D/L method. Ultimately, South Africa was handed a loss by 17 runs in the match by Duckworth- Lewis method. Dinesh Chandimal with his innings of 43 runs took Man of the Match award.
