And now, to compete among these top leagues, India and Pakistan have also joined the race. Both nations have introduced their own women’s leagues that will take place from next year.
WIPL vs WPSL: Women’s Indian Premier League vs Women’s Pakistan Super League: All details
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have officially announced their own women’s T20 league in this month of October. These two leagues will be run one after another. As per the announcement by the BCCI, the first season of the WIPL is set to take place next year, which will end on February 26, 2023. On the other hand, just like BBL and WBBL, the Women’s PSL will take place alongside the men’s HBL PSL next year in March 2023.
The only difference will be that the final for the WPSL will take place one day before the men’s PSL. These two leagues got the green signal from their respective boards to increase the brand value of the game in women’s cricket. Without a doubt, this will surely have a big impact on women’s cricket. Notably, the IPL and PSL are already among the top T20 leagues when it comes to brand value. Top players from across the globe in this competition. That is the same vision with the women’s version of these leagues moving forward.
WIPL vs WPSL: Teams and playing conditions
The inaugural season of the women’s IPL will have a total of five teams as decided. Each team will pick a total of 18 players for the competition. The first season will see a total of 22 games, including the final. As per the media reports, every team can pick six overseas players for their side. However, a maximum of five players can play in the playing XI at once. But the condition is that four players are allowed from a full-member squad, while one overseas player must be from an associate nation. The complete schedule is yet to be announced. But the first WIPL season will conclude before the start of the men’s IPL in March.
Speaking of the Women’s PSL, the PCB announced that both the WPSL and the men’s PSL will take place at the same time. A total of four teams will take part in the first edition of the tournament. Just like in WIPL, in the Women’s Pakistan Super League, every team will pick 18 players for their side. That list includes 12 local players from Pakistan and six overseas women’s cricketers. The first season of the WPSL will see a total of 13 games, including the final.
Just like the men’s T20 tournament, both WIPL and WPSL are scheduled to take place one after another. This was decided to avoid any clashes between the two leagues. That’s why we might see top female cricketers across the globe taking part in these two leagues. But only time will tell which team will overcome the other in the future.
