T20 World Cup 2022: The next edition of the T20 World Cup is about to start within four weeks’ time. All the teams are gearing up for the upcoming massive tournament. Australia ended up lifting the championship last time, and they will now defend their title at home. Aside from them, there are a few other teams that appear to be strong contenders. The tournament will start on October 16 with a match between Sri Lanka and Namibia.
Firstly, eight teams will play for the four spots in the “Super 12” stage. Then, all 12 teams will compete against each other for the top four. Some teams have announced their squads, while some are yet to be announced. South Africa, who are looking like a very tough team, have also announced a 15-member team for the World Cup.
South Africa Squad for T20 World Cup 2022
After Australia and England, South Africa became the third team to announce their World Cup squad. Cricket South Africa (CSA) has made a few intriguing team selections. Temba Bavuma, who led the team in the last World Cup, is back after an injury and will lead the side in the tournament. But one big name who will miss the event is top-order batsman Rassie van der Dussain.
The right-hander suffered an injury during the England tour and has been ruled out. It will be a big area of concern for the Proteas. However, they have picked Rilee Rossouw back in the team after an impressive performance in the Vitality Blast T20. The rest, they have gone with the familiar faces.
One surprise inclusion is Tristan Stubbs, a young hard-hitting batter who played for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2023. South Africa has got the variety in the pace department. The likes of Rabada, Nortje, Ngidi, Parnell, and Pretorius bring a big challenge for the opposition batters.
Squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), David Miller, Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada, Heinrich Klaasen, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Wayne Parnell, Dwaine Pretorius, Keshav Maharaj, Rilee Rossouw, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs.
Group and Schedule for South Africa
South Africa couldn’t qualify for the semi-finals of the last World Cup. It was not because they played a poor cricket, but it was because of a lower net run-rate. The points of South Africa were equal to Australia and England, but due to negative NRR, they couldn’t qualify for the top four.
But this time, they would like to make sure that they go with a positive result. South Africa is in Group 2, along with India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and two qualifiers. They will open their campaign with a match against the top team of Group B (qualifying team) on October 24, Monday.
