England is only one of two teams to win the T20 World Cup twice. They won their maiden T20 title in 2010 and then repeated that feat in 2022 in Australia. England has always produced players who play an aggressive brand of cricket. But it took a few years for England to score their first T20I century.
It came off the bat of Alex Hales in 2014. Overall, five English batters have scored T20I centuries for their country. However, there have been three instances when three English batters ended their innings at 99 and missed their centuries by just one run. 1. Alex Hales – 116 not out vs Sri Lanka in 2014
The first ever T20I century for England came in March 2014 in Chattogram. It came against Sri Lanka in the 2014 T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka scored a total of 189/4 in their 20 overs. Tillakaratne Dilshan (55 off 47) and Mahela Jayawardene (89 off 51) scored half-centuries. In reply, England lost two wickets in the first over without scoring. But then, Hales made sure that England is winning the game. He smashed a 60-ball century and made an unbeaten 116 runs with 11 fours and six sixes. England made 190/4 in 19.2 overs and won by six wickets.
2. Dawid Malan – 103 not out vs New Zealand in 2019
After the first T20I century, England registered their second hundred after a gap of almost five and a half years. Dawad Malan became the second English player to touch the three-figure mark in the shorter format. He scored it against New Zealand in November 2019 in Napier. Malan scored a 48-ball century and made 103 not out with nine fours and six maximums to help England post their highest T20I total. They made 241/3 and dismissed New Zealand for 165 runs to win it by 76 runs.
3. Liam Livingstone – 103 runs vs Pakistan in 2021
It took England another to register their third T20I century. Liam Livingstone scored it in July 2021 against Pakistan in Nottingham, which is also the fastest T20I century for England. Pakistan scored a mammoth total of 232/6 in their first inning, with Babar Azam (85 off 49) and Mohammad Rizwan (63 off 41) scoring half centuries. England struggled at 48/3, but then Livingstone scored a 42-ball century. He made 103 off 43 balls, with six fours and nine sixes. But once he got out, England’s hopes also ended. England got all out for 201 and lost by 31 runs.
4. Jos Buttler – 101 not out vs Sri Lanka in 2021
The fourth English batter to score a T20I century is Jos Buttler, who did it in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. He scored it against Sri Lanka at Sharjah Ground in November 2021. Batting first, England reached a score of 163/4 in their first inning. Buttler scored an unbeaten century off 67 balls. He made 101 not out with six fours and six sixes. In reply, Sri Lanka got dismissed for 137 runs and lost the game by 26 runs.
