IPL Auction 2023: Sunrisers Hyderabad Retained and Released Players with remaining Purse Value

IPL Auction 2023: The mini-auction for the upcoming 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League is all set to take place in Kochi on December 23. All ten teams have submitted their lists of retained and released players by the BCCI deadline. However, there were two teams that released their captains who led the team last season. Those teams were the Punjab Kings and the Sunrisers Hyderabad. PBKS released Mayank Agarwal and appointed Shikhar Dhawan as their captain.

On the other hand, SRH released their most experienced player and former captain, Kane Williamson. This decision came as a surprise to many. Well, apart from him, there are some decisions made by the franchise ahead of the auction. Notably, the management faced a lot of criticism in the last auction when they let go of David Warner and Rashid Khan from their team. And SRH retained Williamson along with Umran Malik and Abdul Samad for a total price of INR 22 crore in the 2022 season.

The Orange Army won the IPL in the 2016 season under the leadership of David Warner. However, they released the veteran Australian last season. And now they have released a total of 12 players, and that too is mostly young talent, which indicates that the franchise is looking to create a team for the future. Both Kashmir-born players, Abdul Samad and Umran Malik, were retained this time around as well.

Two of the best performers from the last season, Rahul Tripathi and young opener Abhishek Sharma, have also been retained for the next edition. Washington Sundar, an Indian all-rounder who was injured in the middle of the season, is also among those who have been retained. Sundar was ruled out in the middle of the season due to an injury. The Indian pace bowling duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan are also in the list of retained players.

Bhuvi led the team in the last game in the absence of Williamson. So he might lead this time as well, while Natarajan missed the last season due to injury. The South African pair of Aiden Markram and Marco Jansen have also been retained after doing well last season. One name that was a surprise was that of New Zealand wicket-keeper Glenn Philips, who didn’t get much of a chance last season. Recently, Philip Hughes scored a century in the T20 World Cup in Australia.

IPL Auction 2023: Released Players for SRH

The biggest name that was released by any franchise was Kane Williamson. That created a buzz on social media. Because it was only Williamson that the franchise retained last season, and now they have released the Kiwi skipper as well. So it will be interesting to see who will lead the team. Will the management look for the player within the team, or will they pick their captain in the auction?

However, releasing Williamson has certainly added another INR 14 crore to their bank. That means SRH can go hard at the auction if they need to. Apart from him, another big name that was released was West Indian captain Nicholas Pooran. SRH purchased him for INR 10 crore. Romario Shepherd and Sean Abbott were the other two overseas players on this list. However, releasing Shreyas Gopal and Priyam Garg was a bit of a surprise. Overall, they have released a total of 12 players.

Remaining Purse Value for Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad will enter with the highest amount in the 2023 auction. That means they can fight to the end if there is a bidding war. The remaining purse value for SRH is INR 42.25 crore, which is almost 45 percent of the total. Now, the management needs to find a captain, and they also need an opening batter and a finisher. Thus, it looks like they will surely target Ben Stokes to get the captain and an all-rounder.
