IPL 2023: The mini-auction 2023 was held in Kochi on Friday, December 23. A total of 405 players were shortlisted to come down under the hammer. But this auction produced some of the most expensive buys in the history of the Indian Premier League. Sunrisers Hyderabad entered the auction with the highest purse value. And that’s what the franchise also showed at the event. It was clear that if SRH wanted a player, they were going all out for it.
SRH won the IPL title in 2016 under the leadership of David Warner. Then they played another final under Kane Williamson in 2018. But the last two seasons haven’t been great for the Orange Army. They couldn’t qualify for the playoffs in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. As a result, the franchise released their captain, Kane Williamson, as well as their highest bid from the previous season, Nicholas Pooran, who was signed for INR 10 crore.
IPL 2023: Sunrisers Hyderabad to name a new captain
SRH entered the auction with the largest purse value of INR 42.25 crore, and they dominated the auction. The franchise was very active from the very beginning. They started an intense bidding war with the Rajasthan Royals for English star Harry Brook. The bid crossed the Rs 13-crore mark, and the RR purse value was less than that. As a result, SRH acquired the English batsman for a whopping price of INR 13.25 crore. He became the most expensive player ever bought by SRH in its history. Previously, it was Manish Pandey who was picked in 2018 for a price of INR 11 crore.
Brook also became the costliest player in the separatist batting category, surpassing Shimron Hetmyer (DC for INR 7.75 crore in 2020). In its search for a new captain, SRH also made a bid for former Punjab Kings skipper Mayank Agarwal. He was released by his franchise ahead of the 2023 auction after a poor performance with the bat last season. Thus, the franchise also signed Agarwal in the auction for a healthy price of INR 8.25 crore. He can also provide captaincy option to the team.
Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Chennai Super Kings were also keen to pick the Indian batter for their teams. But SRH was firm to pick the Indian batter. The franchise also bought West Indian spin-bowling all-rounder Akeal Hosein for a price of INR 1 crore. SRH bought English veteran spinner Adil Rashid to strengthen their spin-bowling attack.

IPL 2023: SRH has made some big buys in the auction
Overall, SRH picked 13 players in the auction, including four overseas players. Now it will be interesting to see who they appoint as their captain for the next season. It was Bhuvneshwar Kumar who led in the absence of Kane Williamson last season. But some reports suggest that the franchise is thinking about giving the leadership role to South African star Aiden Markram. The Orange Army also acquired South African wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen for INR 5.25 crore.
