Rohit Sharma Captaincy Record in T20 : Becomes First Captain in history to win 14 Consecutive T20I

India won the second T20I match against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. With this win, the Men in Blue lead the three-match T20I series 2-0 with the third match to be played on Sunday at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. It was also the comeback game for the Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma, who missed the fifth test due to COVID-19. And he returned with a bang and created history in the first game.

It was the 14th successive win for the Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, in the T20I format. And he has broken the previous record set by Afghanistan and Romania for 12 consecutive matches. The visitors won the match comprehensively by 49 runs in the absence of their senior players. However, Rohit has remained unbeaten as the skipper since November 2019 in the shortest format. He made his T20 captaincy debut in 2017. Overall, he has led India in 30 games and has 26 wins under his belt. 

The Indian skipper will look to maintain his record and will look to win the second game as well. This win will also help the team to take a 3-0 unassailable lead heading into the third game on Sunday. On the other hand, the other two captains who have won 12 back-to-back matches are Asghar Afghan of Afghanistan and Ramesh Satheesan of Romania.

Speaking of the performance of India’s skipper, during his knock of 24 runs against England in the first game, he also broke the record of the former Indian skipper, Virat Kohli. Rohit has now reached 1000 T20I runs as a captain in 29 innings, while Virat took 30 innings to do so. He also became the second fastest captain to reach 1000 runs. Rohit is just behind Babar Azam, who took 25 innings. The Indian skipper has scored 1011 as captain in 29 innings at an average of 37 and a strike rate of 153. He has also scored two centuries and seven half-centuries during this period.

Speaking of this winning streak of 14 matches, which started against Bangladesh in second and third T20I in November 2019. India won those matches by 8 wickets and 30 runs, respectively. Then, India won a match against New Zealand in February 2020 under Rohit. After that, India whitewashed New Zealand, West Indies and Sri Lanka 3-0 at home, which helped to level the record. At the end, India won the first T20 against England to break this record.
