Team India has been one of the top-ranked sides in the shorter format. They made their debut in 20-over cricket in December 2006 against South Africa in Johannesburg. The Men in Blue won that game by six wickets. After that, India went on to win the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007 in South Africa under the leadership of MS Dhoni.
Since then, India has always been one of the strongest teams in this format. Virender Sehwag was the first T20I captain, who led India in first game. Until now, there have been 10 captains who have led India in the shorter format of the game. On March 28, 2014, India became the No. 1 ranked team in the T20 format for the very first time. Apart from winning the 2007 T20 World Cup, India played the finals in 2014 and the semi-finals in 2016 and 2022.
