New Zealand made their ODI debut on February 11, 1973 against Pakistan. Famously known as “Black Caps & Kiwis” New Zealand has been part of the ODI World Cup in all 12 editions. New Zealand is one of the most unluckiest teams in this cruel game. Not many would know that New Zealand has played 8 semi-finals out of 12 editions of the ODI World Cups.
That is equal to Australia, as they have also played eight semi-finals and went on to win five World Cups. That shows the difference. Well, New Zealand has played two finals in 2015 and 2019 and ended up on the losing side. But you never know, with the consistent performance at the big stage, the Kiwis can be the next world champions. This team became the No. 1 ranked ODI team for the very first time on May 3, 2021.
New Zealand record in ODI Cricket (Team Records)
- New Zealand previously held the record for biggest ODI win in the history. They beat Ireland by 290 runs. However, later India broke this record and now New Zealand is the second best.
- New Zealand has registered 10-wicket wins in ODI cricket for a total of nine times, which is the second best in history after West Indies (10 wins).
- The Black caps have registered five wins with a margin of just 1-run which is the second most in history after Australia (6 wins). New Zealand was the first team to register a 1-run victory in October 1976 against Pakistan.
- It is a privilege of having all-rounders in any forms of the game. But there were some rather unusual occasions when nine bowlers were used by a team in an ODI game. New Zealand was the first team to use nine bowlers in an inning and they did it in March 1983 against Sri Lanka, when nine Kiwi bowlers bowled in a match.
- Using substitute during fielding is common in the game. But what if that substitute fielder picks up most catches in an inning. New Zealand’s John Bracewell holds the record for four catches in an inning as substitute in November 1980 against Australia.
- New Zealand’s Richard Hadlee was the first ODI player to complete a double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets. He scored 1751 runs and took 158 wickets in 115 games.
New Zealand’s Record in ODI Cricket (Players Records)
- Ross Taylor was the first player in history to play 100 or more matches in all three formats of the game. He played 112 Tests, 236 ODIs, and 102 T20Is in his career.
- Martin Guptill holds the record for the second-highest individual score in ODIs. He smashed an unbeaten 237 off 163 balls against the West Indies in the 2015 World Cup. It is also the highest score by a batter in a World Cup match.
- James Neesham smashed 34 runs (6666nb261) off one over from Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera in 2019, which is the joint-third most runs scored in an over.
- Kane Williamson scored 578 runs in the 2019 ODI World Cup, which is the second-most runs in a single edition of the World Cup by a captain after Australia’s Allan Border’s 590 in the 1985 edition.
- James Franklin holds the record for the highest strike rate in an ODI inning. He smashed 31 not out from 8 balls at a strike rate of 387.50 against Canada in the 2011 World Cup.
- Corey Anderson held the previous record for fastest ODI century off 36 balls against the West Indies in 2014. Later, AB de Villiers broke it with a 31-ball century.
- Marting Guptill holds the record for the joint-fastest ODI fifty off 17 balls. He scored it against Sri Lanka in 2015.
- Martin Crowe holds the record for the second-longest streak without a duck with 119 ODI innings. He is only behind Rahul Dravid (120 innings).
- Former opener Glenn Turner holds the record for most balls played by a batter in an inning. He played 201 balls and scored 171 not out against East Africa in June 1975.
New Zealand’s ODI Records vs Other Teams
Unlike other test-playing nations, New Zealand is the only team that has never lost an ODI match against any associate nations. Their record against other teams is also pretty impressive. Apart from one or two teams they have a good track record in the 50-over cricket.
