When it comes to the Indian Premier League, only two teams come to mind: the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. These two teams share nine IPL trophies between them. Especially MI, which has won the competition five times in total. They have also won the Champions League Twenty-20 twice, in 2010 and 2014.
Being the most successful IPL team, MI holds many records in the league’s history. In every edition, they enter as the top favorite to win. However, it took them five seasons to win their maiden IPL title. But after that, they won four more. In this article, we will cover the list of some incredible records by MI, which are hard to break for any other team.
1. Biggest Win Margin (runs) in IPL
Mumbai Indians hold the record for the biggest win in the IPL in terms of runs. It came in the 2017 season when MI faced the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). Batting first, MI made 212/3 runs in their 20 overs. In the second inning, Mumbai dismissed Delhi for just 63 runs to register the biggest IPL win by 146 runs, which is still a record. The second best is by RCB (144 runs) against Gujarat Lions in 2016.
2. Best Bowling Figure by a bowler in IPL
It is a rare sight for a bowler to take five wickets in a four-over spell. But in some rare cases, bowlers also take six wickets. And there are three occasions in the IPL when a bowler has taken six wickets. But the best bowling figure in the IPL is registered under the name of an MI bowler, Alzarri Joseph, who took 6/12 runs in the 2019 season against Sunrisers Hyderabad. It is still a record and seems unbreakable.
3. Most IPL title wins
Mumbai Indians have won the IPL title five times in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 and are the only team to do so. Only CSK with four titles is near to them. MI has a staggering record in the IPL final. They have played it six times and won it five times, which is also amazing in itself.
4. Most matches won in IPL
Not just the title, but the Mumbai Indians have also won the most matches in the history of the Indian Premier League. Until now, they have played a total of 231 games (the most by any team) and won 129 matches, with 98 defeats and two tied games. The next-best team is CSK with 121 wins.
5. Fastest IPL target chase (wins with most balls to spare)
MI registered a quite unique record for chasing the fastest IPL target, or the biggest win in terms of balls remaining. It happened in the 2008 season when they faced the Kolkata Knight Riders. MI dismissed KKR for a low score of 67 runs. For MI, Shaun Pollock picked up three wickets. In reply, MI took only 5.3 overs to chase down the target and won the game with 87 balls to spare, which is the most for any team.
