Chennai Super Kings is certainly among the top T20 franchises in the world. This team has devoted fans all over the world, not just in India. They are one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League. CSK has won the league four times, in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021, respectively.
The four-time IPL champions have also won the Champions League Twenty20 twice, in 2010 and 2014. All this success shows how dominant this team has been over the years in the IPL. And here we will talk about more dominance from the Yellow Army. This article will feature some of the incredible records held by the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL’s history.
1. Most IPL finals in the tournament
Chennai Super Kings got suspended for two seasons in 2016 and 2017, respectively. It means they have played fewer seasons as compared to other existing teams. But you will be surprised to know that out of the 13 seasons that CSK has played, they have been part of the IPL finals nine times, which is a record in itself. MI is the second-best team with six appearances in the IPL finals. CSK won the league in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021, while ending as runners-up in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2019.
2. Most Playoffs appearance in the IPL
Not just in the IPL finals, CSK has been the most consistent team in the tournament since the start. For other teams, it is like how many seasons they have played in the playoffs, but for CSK, it is like how many seasons they have not played in the IPL playoffs. Out of 13 seasons, CSK has qualified for the playoff stage 11 times, which is the most for any team. The only two seasons when they didn’t qualify were in 2020 and 2022.
3. Lowest Score Defended in IPL
CSK is not about just scoring big runs but they have done well in defending the score. That’s why the lowest score ever defended in the IPL is registered under the name of the four-time champions. CSK defended the score of 116 runs in the 2009 season in the 54th game of the tournament against Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab). Batting first, CSK made 116/9 and restricted PBKS to just 92 runs to win by 24 runs. Thus, they hold this unique IPL record.
4. Most games as an IPL captain
The four-time champions have appointed only three captains in the IPL’s history so far, since the inaugural season. Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja have led the Yellow Army in a few games. But it is all MS Dhoni, who has led the franchise so far in the league. He has led CSK in a total of 196 games until now, which is the most for any IPL captain. The next best is MI skipper Rohit Sharma with 143 games. MSD has led this team to 123 wins, 86 defeats, and one game that ended in no-result. MSD’s 123 wins as a captain is also a record in the IPL.
