IPL 2023: Another blockbuster edition of the Indian Premier League is all set to start in the first week of March. After a cash-rich mini-auction in December 2023 in Kochi, all teams have filled their missing pieces and are all set to begin the upcoming season with a bang. Some veteran superstars and new faces have joined the league this time. This season is extra special in a few ways. Firstly, this time, the top three most expensive players in history will feature in the league.
And most importantly, this season will see all teams play their games at home and away. It means every team will play half its games at home and half away. This will be the 16th season of this marquee league, but this might also be the last season for some of the biggest names in this tournament. Hence, we have brought you a list of players who might retire from the IPL after the 2023 season.
5. Shikhar Dhawan
Veteran Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan has been part of the league since the 2008 season. He has played for five different franchises in his IPL career so far. The left-hander is already 37 years old and might play his last season as a PBKS skipper. With a growing age and not getting many chances in the Indian teams, Dhawan might retire from the IPL after this season. He has played 200 games and scored 6086 runs at 35.18 with two centuries and 46 half-centuries.
4. Dinesh Karthik
Another veteran Indian player who is getting older is Dinesh Karthik. The 37-year-old has been part of the league since the first season in 2008 and has represented six different franchises in his IPL stint. He played for India in 2022 T20 World Cup but after that he is out of India’s radar. DK has played 222 games and scored 4262 IPL runs with 20 half-centuries. His age is another factor that indicates that he might retire from the IPL soon.
3. Ravi Ashwin
The 36-year-old veteran Indian off-spinner Ravi Ashwin is anothe player that might hung his boots from the league after IPL 2023. Ashwin is part of India’s red-ball setup, but in white-ball cricket, he is not getting many opportunities. And with India playing more tests in a year, he might sideline the league to pursue his red-ball career for a while. Because an injury due to packed season, may end his career. Ashwin has played 184 games and has 157 IPL wickets.
2. Amit Mishra
Veteran Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra was not part of the last season in 2022 because no franchise picked him up in the auction. His growing age and competition with younger spinners can be the reason. But this season, it was the Lucknow Super Giants who signed him for his base price of INR 50 lakhs. He is 40 year old and we might see him for the last time in 2023. Mishra has taken 166 wickets in 154 games, which is the joint-third highest wicket taker in IPL.
1. MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni is certainly the biggest name in the Indian Premier League, and Chennai Super Kings have a huge fanbase because of him leading the team. MSD gave his captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja last season, but he became the captain midway through after CSK’s horrible start. Some media reports confirmed that MSD will retire from the IPL after this season because he wants to play his last season at home in Chennai. MSD has played 228 games and scored 4878 runs at 39.66 with 24 half-centuries.
