Stats and records can’t always suggest how successful a team can be. It is true that Islamabad United has won the Pakistan Super League twice. But Peshawar Zalmi is the only PSL team to have played the PSL final four out of seven times. That shows how consistent this team has been throughout the competition since the very first season.
Peshawar won the PSL in the 2017 season and ended up as runners-up in the 2018, 2019, and 2021 seasons, respectively. So far, a total of five players have led this team in the tournament. Two-time T20 World Cup winner Darren Sammy of the West Indies also led this team. And this article will feature the list of players that have led the 2017 PSL winner in the tournament.

4. Shahid Afridi (Captain in PSL 2017 and 2016)
Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi was the first player to lead Peshawar in the PSL in the inaugural season. He was their first captain to lead the team in the 2016 edition. Under Afridi, the franchise finished third in 2016. He led the team in 10 games, winning six and losing four. Afridi played for Peshwar for two seasons. He scored 264 runs in 15 innings and also took wickets, with a best of 5/7.
3. Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik (led two matches each)
Two of the strongest pillars in the Pakistan batting lineup of the last decade, Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik, also led Peshwar Zalmi during their stints with the franchise. Hafeez played for them from 2016 to 2018 and led two games in the absence of regular captain Darren Sammy. Meanwhile, Malik, who joined the team in 2020 and is still part of the team, captained the side in two games when Wahab Riaz was not available. Both captains have one win and one loss out of two games.
2. Wahab Riaz (Captain of PSL 2020 onwards)
The current captain, Wahab Riaz, is a long-term trustworthy player for this team. He joined the setup in 2016 and has not played for any other PSL team until now. With his consistent performance, the franchise made him the captain after Darren Sammy left the team. Riaz led Peshwar to the 2021 final, but they lost to the Multan Sultans. Under him, Peshawar has played 28 games and has 13 wins, 14 losses, and one tie. Riaz is the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 103 wickets in 77 games.
1. Darren Sammy (led Peshawar Zalmi to 2017 PSL win)
Former West Indian captain Darren Sammy, who led his country to two T20 World Cup wins in 2012 and 2016, has also led Peshawar Zalmi to their maiden PSL title. He became the captain in 2017, and in his very first season, he led his team to glory. Sammy played until 2020 as a captain. He led his team for a total of 39 games and has 22 wins, 16 defeats, and one no-result as a captain. Sammy also played 49 PSL games and scored 691 runs at a strike rate of 146.39 with 9 wickets with the ball as well.
