PBKS: The IPL mini-auction 2022 ended with many surprises. One of the biggest news was that this auction gave the costliest player ever bought in the history of the Indian Premier League. Earlier, the most expensive player was Chris Morris, who was bought for INR 16.25 crore in 2021 by Rajasthan Royals. But Punjab Kings have now broken that record and made the biggest player bid in the tournament’s history.
Punjab Kings are always known for their active engagement with their fans. However, the team’s performance hasn’t been great in this tournament. Punjab has made the IPL playoffs only twice in 15 seasons. They played the IPL final in 2014 and were the semi-finalists in 2008. Since then, PBKS has crossed the group stage in last 8 seasons. However, after the IPL 2023 auction, it looks like this team has certainly got the potential to make the top four in the next edition of the IPL.
PBKS Squad for IPL 2023
With Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow at the top, the franchise has made the batting line-up more exciting. The likes of Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Shahrukh Khan, and Liam Livingstone are already there within the team. On top of that, the inclusion of Sam Curran and Sikandar Raza will provide them with much stronger middle-order and all-round options. The bowling department will have Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada, and Curran, with Rahul Chahar as a first-choice spinner in the team. Overall, Punjab are looking like a well-balanced team for the next season.

PBKS IPL 2023: Punjab made the biggest ever purchase to acquire Sam Curran for INR 18.5 crore
The Mohali-based franchise entered the 2023 auction with the second-highest purse value of INR 32.2 crore. And that’s what they proved in the auction. They just went all out on the English all-rounder Sam Curran and signed him for a staggering amount of INR 18.5 crore. With this deal, Curran became the most expensive player in the history of the tournament since its start. Notably, Curran made his IPL debut for PBKS.
Although the four-time champion Chennai Super Kings were also keen to pick the all-rounder in their squad and jumped into the bidding war with Punjab. But eventually, it was PBKS that won the bidding war and acquired the “Man of the Tournament” of the T20 World Cup 2022. PBKS released their captain, Mayank Agarwal, ahead of the auction and gave the captaincy to veteran Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan. Thus, the left-hander will be seen leading the team. Another exciting purchase by the franchise was the signing of Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikander Raza, who was picked for his base price of INR 50 lakh.
Then, the franchise also went all out for uncapped India “A” pacer Mukesh Kumar. Punjab signed him for a whopping INR 5.5 crore. Although, Punjab also tried to resign Mayank Agarwal, SRH won that bid. PBKS also signed some uncapped Indian talent. They picked Chhattisgarh batter Harpreet Bhatia, along with Karnataka pacers Vidwath Kaverappa, Shivam Singh, and Mohit Rathe.
