The Cricket World Cup 2023 is just a couple of weeks away from its start in India. The 13th edition of the Cricket World Cup will take place entirely in India. Just like the last two editions, ten teams will be taking part in the competition and will play one game each against the other nine opponents. The top four teams will qualify for the finals.
This tournament will have a total of 48 games, including the final on November 19. However, the opening game of the tournament will see a clash between last edition’s finalists. England will take on New Zealand in the first game on October 5, which will take place in Ahmedabad. Now, the last date to announce World Cup squads is September 27, and Pakistan revealed their team on September 22 (Friday).
ODI World Cup 2023 Pakistan Squad
Many former cricketers and cricket pundits have considered Pakistan one of the favorites to win the tournament, largely because the conditions in India are pretty similar to those in Pakistan. Furthermore, they are the No. 1 ranked team in the world. However, there was a noise after Pakistan failed in the Asia Cup 2023 that there should be a number of changes in the team for the World Cup.
But the squad announced on Friday saw the same set of players that were part of the Asia Cup. Babar Azam will be the captain, and all the players are the same. However, Naseem Shah suffered a shoulder injury during the Asia Cup, which is why he has been ruled out of the competition. Veteran pacer Hasan Ali has replaced him. Interestingly, Hasan hasn’t played an ODI game since the last 16 months or so. Apart from that, Usama Mir has been picked for the team.
He is a leg-spinner who can also bat lower down the order. Hasan will join the likes of Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Wasim Jr., and Haris Rauf in the pace department. All-rounder Faheem Ashraf was also dropped, and Mohammad Nawaz has been picked. Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan have retained their places after a poor show.
