IPL 2023: The most successful franchise in the history of the Indian Premier League didn’t have the same performance in the 2022 season. The Mumbai Indians, who came in as favourites in the last season, ended at the bottom of the points table. MI started the season with eight back-to-back defeats. In the end, MI only registered four wins out of 14 games. However, a few points stood out.
The main issue was the lack of good options within the team. Thus, the franchise has decided not to repeat the same mistake in the next edition of the tournament. That is why MI Paltan has made some difficult decisions ahead of the December auction. The five-time champions have released a total of 13 players and have shown trust in the youngsters.
MI 2023 Retained Players List
Without a doubt, MI must strive to improve their performance and win their sixth IPL title. That is why the franchise has retained those players who might give them a long run. Skipper Rohit Sharam, along with Jasprit Bumrah, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav, were confirmed, and they are retained as well. Kishan, who was bought for a staggering amount of INR 15.25 crore, also got the nod. He scored 418 runs in 14 games at an average and strike rate of 32.15 and 120.11.
Apart from him, young Tilak Verma, who did pretty well, has also gotten the benefit of his performance. Another prominent name was English pacer Jofra Archer, who was selected for INR 8 crore but did not play last season due to injury. Despite that, the franchise has retained him. He and Bumrah will undoubtedly form a lethal combination. On the other hand, the Australian pacer Jason Behrendorff has been picked through the trading window.
Young South African star batter Dewald Brevis was also retained by the team. Apart from him, hard-hitting batsman Tim David was another notable retention. MI was looking for a finisher after the Pandya Brothers, and Tim did a good job with the limited opportunities he had last season. Tristan Stubbs was another overseas young batter. The trio of Brevis, Tubbs, and Tim can surely damage any bowling attack.
Retained Player: Rohit Sharma (c), Suryakumar Yadav, Tim David, Jasprit Bumrah, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wk), Tristan Stubbs, Dewald Brevis, Jofra Archer, Arjun Tendulkar, Jason Behrendorff, Arshad Khan, Kumar Kartikeya, Ramandeep Singh, Hrithik Shokeen, Akash Madhwal
IPL Auction 2023: List Released Players for Mumbai Indians
The biggest news that came from the MI camp was the IPL retirement of veteran Kieron Pollard. The former West Indies skipper joined the MI team in 2010 and was part of all five IPL triumphs. However, due to his non-performance in the last season, the franchise was looking to release him. So he himself decided to retire from IPL cricket. Although, he will stay with the team but in new role.
Pollard has joined the Mumbai Indians as a batting coach. Other overseas players who were released were Daniel Sams, Fabian Allen, and Tymal Mills. Veteran pacers Basil Thampi and Jaydev Unadkat, along with spinners Mayank Markande and Murugan Ashwin, also couldn’t retain their places.
Released Players: Kieron Pollard (retired), Tymal Mills, Daniel Sams, Anmolpreet Singh, Aryan Juyal, Basil Thampi, Fabian Allen, Murugan Ashwin, Jaydev Unadkat, Mayank Markande, Rahul Buddhi, Riley Meredith, Sanjay Yadav
Remaining Purse Value of Mumbai Indians for IPL 2023
After releasing 13 players, the remaining purse value for the Mumbai Indians is INR 20.55 crore. But the biggest need for the franchise is to find a front-line spinner, as they have released both Markande and M. Ashwin. And then, they would like to pick a good finisher to fill Pollard’s role.
