Most Wins at Home in ODI cricket

ODI cricket: The first ever ODI match was played on January 5, 1971, between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Since then, it has become a popular format for the game. With a history spanning over 50 years, ODI cricket has become a fast-moving format, and after the inception of T20I, it has become even better.

A total of 28 teams play this format across the globe. But there are only 10–13 teams that play ODIs both at home and away. And here in this article, we will cover the list of teams that have won the most ODI games playing at home. There is only one team with more than 500 wins. So let’s check.

5. England – 189 wins in 326 matches at home

England was the first of two teams to play an ODI game. They played their first ever game against Australia on January 5, 1971, at the MCG, but that was in Australia. At home, England played their first game on August 24, 1972, against Australia, which they won by 6 wickets. The English team has featured in a total of 773 ODIs, winning 359 along with 345 losses, 9 tied and 30 games ending with no result. But at home, they have played 331 games and won 189, lost 121, 4 games ended in a tie and 17 with no result.

4. New Zealand – 189 wins in 326 matches at home

New Zealand is next on the list with the same number of wins as England. The Black Caps played their first ever ODI game in 1973, while their first ODI at home was against Pakistan in February 1973. They won that game by 22 runs. Overall, they have played 791 games with 364 wins, 378 losses, 7 ties, and 42 no-results. But at home, New Zealand has played 326 games and won 189, while losing 116, with 4 ties and 17 games ending with no result.

3. South Africa – 189 wins in 274 matches at home

South Africa is the third team with 189 ODI wins at home, but they have played fewer games. The Proteas are known for their competitive approach, and at home they are very successful. South Africa has played a total of 647 games overall with 394 wins, 226 defeats, 6 ties, and 21 no-results for a winning percentage of 63.41 (second best overall). The Proteas played their first ever game at home against India in December 1992, which they won by 6 wickets. So far, they have played 274 ODIs at home, winning 189 games with 73 defeats, 3 ties, and 9 no-results.

2. India – 207 wins in 351 matches at home

India is the only team with over 1000 ODI games in the history of the format. They played their first ODI match in 1974, while they played their first game at home against England on November 25, 1981, which England won by 5 wickets. Overall, India has played 1019 games, winning 531 ODIs, with 435 losses, 9 ties, and 43 no-results for a winning percentage of 54.92. At home, India has played 351 ODIs and won 207, lost 132 along with 3 ties and 9 no-result.

1. Australia – 291 wins in 452 matches at home

The most successful ODI team in history, Australia, is sitting at the top of the list. They have also won the most games overall. Australia played their first ODI at home against England on January 5, 1971, which they won by 5 wickets. Overall, the Aussies played 975 games, winning 592 along with 340 losses, 9 ties, and 34 no-results for a winning percentage of 63.39. At home, Australia has played 452 ODIs and won 291 games, 145 losses with 3 ties and 13 no-result.
