BBL: The 12th edition of the Big Bash League is scheduled to start on December 13 with a match between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars. The four-time champions and winners of last season’s Perth Scorchers will defend their title in the upcoming season. A total of eight teams will play in 61 games in the tournament.
One of the prime reasons for Perth to lift the last BBL title was their prime pacer, Andrew Tye, who ended up as the second highest wicket-taker in the tournament. He helped his team to reach the final and lift their fourth trophy. However, there have been a few instances when a bowler went on to perform brilliantly throughout the season. In this article, we will cover the list of bowlers with the most wickets in one BBL season.
5. Andrew Tye (25 wickets) in 2021-22 for Perth Scorchers
As discussed, one of the prime reasons that the Perth Scorchers lifted their fourth BBL title was veteran pacer Andrew Tye. He ended up as the joint-second highest wicket-taker in the season. In 16 games, the pacer picked up a total of 25 wickets and his best bowling figure came in the final against the Sydney Sixers. He took 3/15 in the final to help his team win the match.
4. Hayden Kerr (25 wickets) in 2021-22 for Sydney Sixers
Having won the 2019 and 2020 BBL editions, Sydney Sixers made it to the final for a third consecutive time in the last edition. But they ended up on the wrong side and lost the final and couldn’t make a hat-trick of BBL titles. But it was a tremendous performance from the Sixers. It was largely through the performance by Hayden Kerr. The all-rounder ended the last season as the highest wicket-taker for his franchise. He picked up 25 wickets in 17 games at an economy of 7.50, which is the joint fourth highest in a single edition.
3. Jhye Richardson (29 wickets) in 2020-21 for Perth Scorchers
Jhye Richardson is third on the list of most wickets in BBL single season. It came in the 2020–21 BBL season for the Perth Scorchers. He ended that season as the highest wicket-taker in the competition and helped his team reach the final of the tournament. Richardson took 29 wickets in 17 games at an economy rate of 7.69. In the final, he took two wickets, but his team lost the match.
2. Peter Siddle (30 wickets) in 2021-22 for Adelaide Strikers
The veteran Australian pacer that made a strong statement in the last edition was Peter Siddle, who emerged as the highest wicket-taker of the 2021-22 season. Siddle, who played for the Adelaide Strikers, finished with 30 wickets in 17 games at 8.33, including one fifer and four four-wicket hauls. Although Adelaide ended the season in fourth place, he was the standout performer for his team.
1. Daniel Sams (30 wickets) in BBL 2019-20 for Sydney Thunder
The Australian all-rounder Daniel Sams tops the list. He holds the record for joint-most wickets in one single season and was the first bowler to take 30 wickets in one season. Sams played 17 games and took 30 wickets in 2019-20 for Sydney Thunder at an economy rate of 7.83. His effort helped his team to qualify for the knockout stage, but they ended up in fourth place.
