His best season came in 2012, when he finished as the leading run scorer. Clarke scored 1595 runs in 11 games at an average of 106.33, which is the most ever by a batter in a calendar year with over 1200-plus runs. He also scored five centuries and three half-centuries, with a best of 329 not out.
4. Graeme Smith (South Africa) – 1656 runs in 2008
Former South African skipper Graeme Smith was a pillar at the top for his team across all formats. He was a consistent performer, which is why he was given the role of captain so early in his career. Smith scored the fourth-highest number of runs in a calendar year in tests. It came in the year 2008, when he scored 1656 runs at an average of 72 in 15 tests. The left-hander also made six centuries and six half-centuries, with a best of 232.
3. Joe Root (England) – 1708 runs in 2021
Former English captain Joe Root has been one of the best batters in modern-day cricket when it comes to the longest format. His numbers are staggering in red-ball cricket, which is why he is sitting in third place on the list. Joe Root ended the 2021 season as the leading run-scorer in tests. He scored 1708 runs in 15 games at an average of 61. Root also made six centuries and four half-centuries, with a best of 228. 2. Viv Richards (West Indies) – 1710 runs in 1976

Richards made 1710 runs in just 11 games in 1976 at an average of 90. He also scored seven centuries and five half-centuries, with a best of 291. Mohammad Yousuf was one of Pakistan’s greats that served the country at the highest level. Yousuf broke the record of Viv Richards in 2006 when he scored the most runs ever in a calendar year in the longest format. He scored 1788 runs in 11 games at an incredible average of 99.33 with a best inning of 202. He scored nine centuries in that year, which is the most by any batter in a calendar year, along with three half-centuries.
