The 2022 season of the Caribbean Premier League is just a couple of weeks away. The CPL is another big T20 league, which is known for its excitement and action-packed matches. This tournament features some of the biggest stars in the game from all around the globe. So many superstars in one place is just a treat for the fans.
So far, a total of nine seasons have been successfully played for the CPL, and the coming season will be the 10th. And with so many hard-hitting and powerful players, it is very difficult for the bowlers to get away. And in this article, we will discuss the most expensive spells ever bowled in the CPL.
3. Andre Russell (0/64) against St. Lucia in 2016
Andre Russell is certainly among the hardiest hitters of the cricket ball. But because he is also a bowler who comes to bowl in the final overs, he has to face some other dangrous batsmen. He has bowled the third most expensive spell in the CPL. It was the 27th match in the 2016 season between St. Lucia Zouka and Jamaica Tallawahs. After winning the toss, Tallawahs chose to bowl first. St. Lucia batters were in a different mood that day.
They scored a total of 206/3 runs in 20 overs and hit all the bowlers to all parts of the ground. But Russell was the most expensive of those. He bowled four overs and gave away 64 runs at an economy of 16 without taking a wicket. In reply, Tallawahs could only manage 143/8 in their 20 overs and lost the game by 63 runs.
2. Raymon Reifer (2/67) against St. Lucia Stars in 2018
Raymon Reifer is second on this unwanted list. It was the 10th game of the 2018 season between St. Lucia Stars and Barbados Tridents at Gros Islet. Barbados won the toss and decided to bowl first. But this decision totally backfired on them. It was a totally strange innings from St. Lucia. Five batsmen scored zero runs, while only three other batters scored all the runs. Andre Fletcher made 80 off 52 balls while Rahkeem Cornwall made 30 off 11.
But the carnage came from the bat of Kieron Pollard, who scored a century. He made 104 runs off just 54 balls, with six fours and eight sixes. All the Barbados bowlers went for plenty, but Reifer gave away the most runs. Despite picking up two wickets, he ended up with a figure of 2/67 and St. Lucia made 226/6. In reply, Barbados only scored 188/6 in their 20 overs and lost the match by 38 runs.
1. Jimmy Neesham (0/68) against St Kitts and Nevis (Most Expensive Spell in CPL)
It is the New Zealand all-rounder, James Neesham, who holds this unwanted record in the CPL. It was the 14th match of the 2019 season between St. Kitts and Nevis and Trinbago Knight Riders. St. Kitts and Nevis won the toss and bowled first. The TKR batters came out hard from the very first over. Lendl Simmons was the top scorer, who made 90 off just 45 balls. As a result, Trinbago made a big total of 216/4 in their 20 overs.
It was a big task for St. Kitts, but they responded really well. The skipper, Carlos Brathwaite, made 64 off just 30 balls, and a few good contributions helped them to reach the exact score, and the game ended in a tie. Later, it was St. Kitts that won the super-over to win the match. But Jimmy Neesham registered his name as the bowler with the most expensive spell in the CPL. He bowled four overs without any wickets and gave away 68 runs at an economy of 17.
