BBL: A bowler’s role is always hard in the game of cricket. But when it comes to bowling in the T20 format, the job becomes harder because the opposition batters are always behind you. That is why we often see many good bowlers going for plenty in T20 cricket. The next edition of the Big Bash League is about to start.
It will get started after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in Australia. The BBL 2022-23 will kick off on December 13 and will see its fans once again. After looking at the rich history of the BBL, one can judge that it is very difficult for the bowlers in this tournament because of the availability of some of the world’s best hitters. In this article, we will cover the list of the most expensive spells in the BBL history.
3. Ben Dwarshuis (0/61) vs Melbourne Stars in 2020 season
The third most expensive spell in the BBL is registered under the name of Ben Dwarshuis. It came in the 34th game of the 2020 season between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers at Melbourne. After winning the toss, Sydney opted to bowl first, but that decision didn’t go well. Both Melbourne openers played and kept on playing till the 20th over. Marcus Stonis and Hilton Cartwright registered the highest BBL partnership in history.
They made 207 for the first wicket and helped their team score 219/1 in 20 overs. Stoinis remained unbeaten on 147* runs off 79 balls with 13 fours and 8 sixes. Cartwright made 59 off 40 balls. Both batters smashed all the Sydney bowlers to all parts. In particular, it was a nightmare for Dwarshuis, who bowled four overs and gave away 61 runs without any wickets. In reply, Sydeny managed only 175/7 and lost the match by 44 runs.
2. Kane Richardson (0/63) vs Hobart Hurricanes in 2021 season
Kane Richardson is one of the talented bowlers in the Australian set-up and is also a regular member of the team. But on your off days, the opposition can cash in. In the 26th match of the 2021 season, the Hobart Hurricanes took on the Melbourne Renegades at Melbourne. After winning the toss, the Renegades decided to bowl first, and they started pretty well. Hobart lost their first three wickets for just 52 runs. But after that, an incredible innings from Ben McDermott helped them to post a massive score of 206/5.
He also got some support from the lower middle class. McDermott made 127 runs off 95 balls, with nine fours and nine sixes. All the Renegades bowlers had poor bowling performances. But Richardson had the worst. He bowled his four overs for 63 runs and didn’t take a wicket. It was the second worst bowling figure in the BBL. In response, the Renegades got all out for 121 runs and lost the match by 85 runs.
1. Liam Guthrie (2/70) vs Melbourne Stars in 2021 BBL season
The worst BBL figure is registered under the name of Liam Guthrie, which came in the 2021 season. It came in the 23rd game of the tournament between Melbourne Stars and Brisbane Heat at Brisbane. The Heat won the toss and elected to bowl first. They started well and took three wickets for just 16 runs. But after that, they had a wonderful partnership of 151 runs for the third wicket between Hilton Cartwright and Joe Clarke.
Cartwright made 79 off 44 balls with 1 four and 8 sixes, while Clarke scored 85 off 44 balls. That partnership screwed the bowling figures of all the Brisbane bowlers. But Guthrie ended up with the worst figure. He gave away 70 runs in four overs and took two wickets. Melbourne made 207/9 in 20 overs. Chasing the target, Brisbane Heat made 187/9 and lost the match by 20 runs.
