Most Consecutive Losses in IPL

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the most well-known cricket league in the world. It will not be a wrong statement to say that the IPL is the biggest cricket tournament that takes place every year in India. So far, the league has successfully hosted 15 seasons. A number of the biggest stars in the world compete in this tournament, which makes this league the most demanding franchise league in the world.

And in the high-voltage IPL environment, sometimes it becomes hard for a team to perform. Losing or winning is part of the game. But if a team loses a few straight games, it can also become a habit. That is why every team and its fans want to avoid losing consecutive games. However, there have been a few teams that have lost a number of games in a row. And here we will cover the teams with the most consecutive defeats in the history of the IPL.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders – 9 Losses in IPL 2009

Kolkata Knight Riders are only one of three teams to have won the IPL multiple times. They have won the league in 2014 and 2016 under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. They are known for playing quality cricket, with some big names in the team. But there was a time in the 2009 season when they lost nine games on the trot and ended the season at the bottom.

KKR started the season with a win and a loss in the first two games. But the third game they played against the Rajasthan Royals ended in a tie. And it was RR that won the super-over to win the game. And from that moment on, KKR lost their next eight straight games. They ended that season with only three wins in 14 games.

2. Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) – 11 Losses (9 in 2014 and 2 in 2015)

Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) have also gone through an unwanted losing streak in the IPL. In fact, they had the league’s joint-longest losing streak in history. DC is one of the toughest teams in the current IPL setup. But earlier, things were a bit different. After making the playoffs in 2012, DC was unable to return to the top four for the next six seasons. And that was the time when they registered the biggest losing streak. It started midway through the 2014 season.

In the first five games, DC had two wins and three losses under their belt, but then they lost all of their last nine games of the season. As a result, they ended at the bottom with only two wins out of 14 games. However, this streak didn’t end that season. Delhi started the 2015 season with two back-to-back defeats, making 11 losses on the row.

1. Pune Warriors India – 11 Losses (9 in 2012 and 2 in 2013)

Pune Warriors India made their IPL debut in 2011. They were only in the league for three seasons, from 2012 to 2013, and did not perform as well as the franchise owner would have liked. Pune ended at 10, 9, and 9 places in those three seasons. Meanwhile, they became the second team to lose 11 consecutive games in the IPL. The streak began in the 2012 season. Although, Pune had a good start to the 2012 season with three wins out of its first four games.

But then they lost the momentum in the middle. Pune finished last in the tournament after losing their final nine games. They only won four games out of 16 in the 2012 edition. Many would have thought that they would do better in the next edition. But they started the 2013 season with two defeats, making their streak 11 games long. However, in the same season, they lost another nine games in a row to equal the second-longest streak as well.
