The Mumbai Indians (MI) have been the most successful team in the history of the Indian Premier League. MI has been part of the IPL since the inaugural season in 2008. However, it took them five seasons to win their first-ever IPL title in 2013. But that was just the start. After that, they won four more IPL titles in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, respectively.
Then, they also won the Champions League Twenty20 in 2011 and 2013. And all the major wins came under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, who is the most successful IPL captain along with MS Dhoni. 3. Harbhajan Singh (30 games as MI captain between 2008 to 2012)
Harbhajan Singh joined the MI set-up in the inaugural season of 2008. He was picked by the franchise for a price of INR 3.4 crore. The former Indian spinner played 10 seasons with MI until the 2017 edition. During his stint with MI, he also led them in the 2012 season. Bhajji led MI in a total of 30 games, which is the third-most for the franchise.
Under his leadership, Mumbai won 14 games, lost 14, and two games ended without a result. Performance wise, he was a key player for them in 2013, 2015 and 2017 IPL wins. He played a total of 136 games for MI and took 127 wickets at 6.95 economy rate with a best of 5/18.
2. Sachin Tendulkar (55 games between 2008 to 2011)
The first ever player to captain Mumbai Indians in the IPL was legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar. He played until 2013 season in the IPL and was part of MI only. Meanwhile, he led the team from the 2008 to 2011 seasons. Under his captaincy, Mumbai played 55 games winning 32 out of them and lost 23 matches.
Sachin couldn’t lead MI to an IPL win as a captain, but in his last season in 2013, MI won their maiden IPL title. He played 78 games for the franchise and scored 2334 runs at an average of 34.83 and a strike rate of 119.81. He also scored one century and 13 half-centuries, with a best score of 100 not out.
1. Rohit Sharma (148 games as MI skipper)
Rohit Sharma took charge of the captaincy in 2013, which changed everything for the franchise. They won five IPL titles and two Champions League titles under his captaincy, making him the most successful IPL captain ever. MI played six finals under him and won five of them, which is also a record in itself. He has been the face of the team.
Rohit has led Mumbai in a total of 148 games and has 83 wins, 61 losses, and four ties to his name. Overall, he has played 182 games for MI and scored 4709 runs at an average of 30.18 and a strike rate of 129.51. The MI skipper has also scored one century and 32 half-centuries. He has the second best win percentage of 56.64 after CSK skipper MS Dhoni (58.85).
