Melbourne Stars: Cricket is a game of numbers. If you score more than your opponents, you win. That is why a batting team always looks to get as many runs as possible in their innings. And if it is a T20 format, then it gives the batters the licence to go after the bowlers from the very first ball. That is why we often see teams scoring big totals in just 20 overs.
With franchise cricket being played all over the world, the dynamics of this format have changed drastically. And one such entering league is the Big Bash League, which gives such huge totals in T20 format. In this article, we will look at the highest totals for the Melbourne Stars, who have been BBL finalists three times (in 2015, 2018 and 2019). In fact, they hold the third-highest T20 totals ever made.
3. Melbourne Stars (208/7) vs Melbourne Renegades in 2013
The third-highest total for the Melbourne Stars came in 2013 at the MCG. It came against the Melbourne Renegades. It was the Renegades that won the toss and decided to bowl first. But that decision didn’t go well for them, as the Stars took the opportunity and registered a huge total. Both Stars openers added 95 runs in just 8.2 overs and also scored their respective half centuries.
Skipper Cameron White made 53 off 38 balls, with three fours and three sixes. Luke Wright scored a 27-ball fifty and made 70 off 32 balls, with 8 fours and five sixes. As a result, the Stars made a big total of 208/7 in their 20 overs. In reply, the Renegades got off to a bad start, losing their first four wickets for just 44 runs. In the end, they got all out for 132 runs in 17.3 overs, losing by 76 runs.
2. Melbourne Stars (219/1) vs Sydney Sixers in 2020
The second-highest total for the Melbourne Stars came in the 2020 season. It was the 34th game of the tournament against the Sydney sixers. The Sixers won the toss and decided to bowl first. Batting first, both openers for the Stars added the highest BBL opening partnership of 207 runs. Hilton Cartwright made 59 off 40 balls with 6 fours and three sixes. It was a big total to chase for any team, and the Sixers needed some good innings. But it didn’t go as planned for the Sydney Sixers, and they only managed 175/7 in their 20 overs and lost the game by 44 runs.
