The Indian Premier League is certainly the most competitive T20 league across the world. It consists of some of the biggest superstars in the world, which brings more quality to the league. That is why it is very tough for teams to end the tournament on a high note. But Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the two most successful teams in the competition, sharing nine trophies between them in the IPL history.
CSK has appeared in nine IPL finals, while MI has played six finals overall. However, playing in a competition final is always stressful; some teams crumble while others hold their nerve. And, over the years, we’ve had teams that couldn’t handle the pressure and get out early. And in this article, we will cover the list of lowest totals made in the IPL final.
3. Deccan Chargers (143/6) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2009 Final
The pressure of playing in the final is immense. That is why most on the team prefer to bat first in the final to put pressure on the opposition. That’s why a low-scoring game also produces entertaining cricket in the final. The third lowest IPL score in the final was made in the 2009 season at Johannesburg. It was the game between Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore. RCB won the toss and decided to bowl.
In fact, they did a really good job with the ball and restricted Deccan to just 143/6. Herschelle Gibbs was the top scorer with an unbeaten 53. Skipper Anil Kumble took 4/16 for RCB. It looked like an easy chase for them. But in reply, the RCB couldn’t keep up the scoring rate. The Deccan bowlers bowled some tight lines and kept taking wickets. Needing 15 runs off the last over and with one wicket left, RCB only managed 8 runs and scored 137/9 to lose by 6 runs. Thus, the third-lowest IPL final total came in a winning cause.
2. Rajasthan Royals (130/9) vs Gujarat Titans in 2022 Final
Often, it has been seen that teams go on to defend low totals when it is a big match. But sometimes the result doesn’t come out exactly the same. The second-lowest total belongs to Rajsthan Royals, which came in the 2022 season against Gujarat Titans. RR and GT were the top two teams in the competition, and they deservedly reached the finals. After winning the toss, RR decided to bat first, but they couldn’t make a big total.
None of the RR batters reached the half-century mark. The highest score came off the bat of Jos Buttler, who made 39 off 35 balls. Hence, they registered the second-lowest IPL final total of 130/9. Chasing the target, GT also struggled at the start, losing 23/2 in 4.3 overs. But opener Shubman Gill (45*) and David Miller (32*) took them home.
