T20 cricket is a game of surprises. In a span of 20 overs, we see many spectacular performances that we don’t see in any other format. It is a fast-moving game and always full of action. Before it’s inception, no one would have thought that a team could also get bowled out under 20 overs in modern-day cricket. But fans have seen many low scoring totals in this format that are still a surprise.
Adding to that, the next edition of the Caribbean Premier League is about to start. So in this article, we will look at the lowest totals in the history of the CPL. There are three totals of below 60 runs for the entire team, which we will look into in this article.
3. Barbados Tridents (59 all out) against Guyana Amazon Warriors in 2017
The third lowest CPL total came in the 2017 season in a match between Guyana Amazon Warriors and Barbados Tridents. After winning the toss, Barbados chose to bowl first. Batting first, Guyana had a shaky start, but they recovered in the middle phase. They made a total of 158/8 in their 20 overs. Jason Mohammed was the top scorer for them, who made 42 runs. It was a below-par total on the pitch.
It looked like Barbados would chase it down easily. But Sohail Tanvir bowled one of the best spells in the history of T20 cricket. He removed both openers in the very first over and went on to pick up five wickets. Tanvir ended up with an incredible figure of 5/3 in his four overs. Thus, Barbados got all out for just 59 runs in 13.4 overs and lost the match by 99 runs.
2. Guyana Amazon Warriors (55 all out) against St. Lucia Zouks in 2020
Guyana Amazon Warriors bowled Barbados for the third lowest total, but the second lowest total is registered under their name. It was the second semi-final of the 2020 season between Guyana and St. Lucia Zouks. After winning the toss, St. Lucia chose to bowl first, and their bowlers proved the decision right. Batting first, Guyana had the worst batting display, with five batsmen getting out for a duck. Only three batters went past the 10-run mark.
As a result, Guyana got all out for the second lowest CPL total of 55 runs in just 13.4 overs. Chandrapaul Hemraj was the top scorer with 25 runs. It was a walk in the park for St. Lucia and they did it without losing any wickets. They chased it down in just 4.3 overs and won the match by 10 wickets with 15.3 overs to spare.
1. Trinbago Knight Riders (52 all out) against Barbados Tridents (Lowest CPL total)
The lowest CPL total is registered under the name of the most successful team, Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel (now Trinbago Knight Riders). It was a match against Barbados Tridents in the 2013 season at Bridgetown. This is the only match that saw two five-wicket hauls in a single match of the CPL. Trinbago won the toss and chose to bat first, but they had a batting nightmare on that day.
The highest score came from the bat of Davy Jacobs and it was 13 runs. Only two batsmen went past the 10-run mark courtesy of an unbelievable bowling performance from Shakib Al Hasan. He registered the only six-wicket haul in CPL. He gave away just six runs in his four overs and took six wickets. Thus, Trinbago got all out for just 52 runs in 12.5 overs. But in the second innings, Barbados also batted horribly and lost its six wickets in chasing the target of 53 runs. Eventually, they made 53/6 in 8 overs and won the game. Fidel Edwards picked up 5/22 in the second innings.
