The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League is just few months away from its start and a lot has unfolded over the last few days regarding the 2023 IPL. Few big names have been released by their franchises, few have been traded and some players have announced their retirement. A total of 163 players have been retained out of which 50 are overseas players.
A mini-auction is going to be held next month which will reveal more things, like how the teams shape up before the start of the season, which players will break the bank and which players will be left unsold.
The 2023 IPL will be played in the same format as the last IPL, where 10 teams will be divided into two groups and a total of 74 matches will be played. This time teams will play home and away matches like they did in seasons prior to 2020.
Australia’s Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins has decided to skip the 2023 IPL citing busy international schedule, while Pollard has announced his retirement. Pollard has been appointed as the batting coach for Mumbai Indians.
Ben Stokes, Sam Curran and Cameron Green are few of the big names that are in the auction pool. There can be a bidding war between teams for these players. England’s former Test captain Joe Root has also put his name forward for the auction. Root had also entered the 2018 IPL auction but remained unsold.
These few players along with some of the released players such as Kane Williamson, Mayank Agarwal and Bravo will be the centre of attention in the auction.
KKR have released the most players, while SRH and MI have also made lot of releases. SRH and Punjab Kings have released their captains from the previous edition, while SRH will be looking for a captain in the auction, Punjab Kings has named Shikhar Dhawan as their captain for the 2023 IPL.
After Pollard was released by Mumbai Indians, the former West Indies captain decided to call time on his IPL career. Pollard released a statement stating ‘Once an MI always an MI.’
