Islamabad United: T20 cricket has grown in popularity among fans as it has evolved. That is why all the test-playing nations have set up their own T20 leagues. One such league that was introduced by Pakistan in 2016 and became successful over the years was the Pakistan Super League. The PSL has now become one of the most competitive T20 tournaments.
And if we are talking about the PSL, how can we forget about the most successful team in this league, Islamabad United? United is the only team to have won the PSL twice, in 2016 and 2018. However, they have dominated in most of the seasons that show on their records. In this article, we will cover their highest scores so far in the PSL.
3. Islamabad United (229/4) vs Quetta Gladiators in 2022
In PSL history, Islamabad United is known for scoring big totals. Their third highest total for the United came in the 2022 season against the Quetta Gladiators at Karachi Stadium. The Gladiators won the toss and decided to bowl first. However, they couldn’t restrict the United from reaching a huge total. Batting first, the United had three 50-plus run partnerships in their batting innings. Paul Stirling scored a 23-ball fifty and made 58 off 28 balls.
Colin Munro also hit a 24-ball fifty to play an unbeaten knock of 72 off 39 balls with 3 fours and 5 sixes. In the end, Azam Khan (65* off 35) gave them a brilliant finish. As a result, the United reach a huge total of 229/4 in their 20 overs. In response, the Gladiators managed only 186 runs all out and lost the game by 43 runs.
2. Islamabad United (238/3) vs Lahore Qalandars in 2019
Islamabad United’s second-highest PSL total is also the third-highest overall in the PSL. It came in the 2019 season when they locked horns with the Lahore Qalandars at Karachi Stadium. The Qalandars won the toss and bowled first. However, it turned out to be a disastrous decision for the United. Batting first, opener Cameron Delport gave the United a brilliant start. He scored 117 off 60 balls, with 13 fours and six sixes.
Chadwick Walton (48 off 30) and Asif Ali (55* off 21) also played good cameos in the end. Thus, the United reached their second highest total of 238/3 in their first innings. Chasing the target, the Qalandars didn’t have the start they needed. Apart from Sohail Akhtar (75 off 34), none of the other batters made a decent score. Thus, they managed 189/9 and lost by 49 runs.
1. Islamabad United (247/2) vs Peshawar Zalmi in 2021
The highest total for Islamabad United is also the highest total for the Pakistan Super League. And it came in the 2021 against the Peshawar Zalmi at the Abu Dhabi. Zalmi won the toss and put the United to bat first, and that was their biggest mistake. The United had some dream batting performances in their innings. Skipper Usman Khawaja scored a 53-ball unbeaten century to start.
He made 105 off 56 balls, with 13 fours and three sixes. Apart from him, Colin Munro (48 off 28), Asif Ali (43 off 14), and Brandon King (46 off 22) played brilliant cameos. As a result the United registered the highest PSL score. They made a massive 247/2 in their first innings. It was the mountain to climb for the Zalmi, but they didn’t lose hope as they went on to reach 232/6 and fell short by just 15 runs. Thus, this game saw two of the highest PSL scores.
