IPL 2023: After a successful edition of the Indian Premier League in 2022, all ten teams are set to start their work for the upcoming season in 2023. The mini auction is set to kick off in Kochi on December 23, with a total of 991 players registered for the auction. This list includes capped Indian and international players along with uncapped Indian and overseas cricketers. However, ahead of the IPL 2023 auction, the BCCI asked all ten teams to submit the list of their released and retained players.
Hence, all ten franchises made some major calls and made some unexpected releases. One such name that came as a surprise release was veteran all-rounder Dwayne Bravo. The 39-year-old was released by the four-time champions, the Chennai Super Kings, which came as a surprise to many. On Friday, it was confirmed that Bravo didn’t register his name for the upcoming auction, which means he didn’t want to feature anymore.
IPL 2023: Dwayne Bravo gets a big role with Chennai Super Kings
However, the 39-year-old also announced his retirement from the IPL on Friday. It means that we will not be able to see him in a CSK jersey anymore, doing some incredible stuff on the cricket field. But the franchise didn’t let Bravo go easily, and they have picked him again, but this time with another role. The Chennai management has appointed the veteran all-rounder as their bowling coach for the upcoming season in 2023.
Notably, L Balaji, the regular CSK bowling coach, has decided to skip the next season. He has taken this decision in order to complete his personal commitment. Thus, the franchise has named Bravo as their bowling coach. The 39-year-old ended his career as the highest wicket-taker in the league. He has played a total of 161 games in the tournament and taken 183 wickets. On the other hand, he has also scored 1560 runs at a strike rate of almost 130 with five half-centuries.
After getting the new role, Bravo thanked the management and was excited about it. He said that he is looking forward to his new journey and enjoys working with other bowlers. The 39-year-old also said that he loves sharing his experience with the bowlers so they can make the right plans against the batsmen. On the other hand, CSK CEO K.S. Viswanathan also congratulated and lauded the all-rounder for his efforts with the team.
Bravo joined the Chennai franchise in 2011 and was a key member of the team. He was part of CSK’s title triumphs in 2011, 2018, and 2021. He also played in the 2014 Champions League, which CSK won. Bravo was the first ever bowler to win the “purple cap” twice in the 2013 and 2015 seasons. For Chennai, he played 144 games and picked up 168 wickets along with 1556 runs.
