IPL 2022: The biggest cricketing competition is about to kick off on March 26, when the defending champions, the Chennai Super Kings, will lock horns against last season’s finalists, the Kolkata Knight Riders. And this year, it will be even bigger and more spectacular because two more teams have entered the competition. So the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League will see ten tough teams competing for the IPL title. We are just two weeks away from the start and all the teams are busy in their preparations for the tournament.
A total of 237 players will represent 10 different franchises in the marquee league. Notably, 76 specialized batsmen are in a race to win the most prestigious award for batters, the “Orange Cap” for the season. The “Orange Cap” is presented to the leading run scorer in the entire season of IPL. And there are some big names who have won it in IPL history. So in this article, we will discuss the top three batsmen who are in a race to become the MVP this season.
IPL 2022: Three Batsmen who could win the “Orange Cap” in the IPL 2022 season
1. KL Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants)
The Indian white-ball vice-captain is a run machine when it comes to the Indian Premier League. He is the most consistent batter and has scored the most runs combined in the last four seasons. Rahul has already won the “Orange Cap” in the 2020 season by playing for the Punjab Kings. Last season, he was just nine runs short of Ruturaj Gaikwad, who won the best batter award with 635 runs.
The right-hander has scored almost 600 or more runs in the last four seasons. He has complied 659, 593, 670, and 626 runs in the 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 seasons, respectively. Rahul has been scoring runs on the international circuit as well. That’s why the world recognizes him as the best Indian white-ball player. It would not be surprising if he maintains his form in 2022 and finishes the season as the leading run-getter.
2. Faf Du Plessis (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
The former South African skipper is one of the best international batters in the league. And that’s what he showed last season as well. Du Plessis was the second highest run-scorer (633) in the IPL 2021, just short of 3 runs behind his opening partner, Ruturaj Gaikwad (635). But this season, he will open for Royal Challengers Bangalore. And with the likes of Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Dinesh Karthik in the team, the pressure will not be on him, which will give him the authority to play freely.
Du Plessis showed great form in the BPL 2022 as well. In fact, he was the top run-scorer in the Bangladesh Premier League 2022 with 295 runs, playing for Comilla Victorians. So there are a lot of chances that he might also finish the IPL 2022 as a top run-getter.
3. Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings)
The man with the golden bat, Ruturaj Gaikwad, was undoubtedly the find of the 2021 season. He was the most improved and best batsman from last season. The right-hander played 16 matches and scored 635 runs, including one century and four half-centuries. And it was his performance that helped the Chennai Super Kings win the 2021 season. But it was not easy for the Maharashtrian batter in the early stages of the IPL. CSK gave him the chance at the top, in the last few matches of the 2020 season in the UAE.
And this move actually worked for them, and since then, Gaikwad hasn’t looked back. He has scored runs everywhere and almost in every match. Not only in the IPL, he was also the top scorer in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021. In just five innings, he scored four centuries and ended the tournament with 603 runs at an incredible average of 150.75. So, without a doubt, he is the man with the potential to win the “Orange Cap” in back-to-back seasons.
