Chennai Super Kings will lock horns against Kolkata Knight Riders to kick off the tournament. Both teams will look to start their campaign with a win to build momentum heading into the tournament. It is a virtual re-match of last season’s final between the two. But both teams will have their new skipper from last season. So let’s check out the match preview and other details.
IPL 2022: Match Preview
Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings are one of the two best teams in the tournament. And the franchise would like to replicate the success they had last season. However, they retained their core players before the auction and brought back some of their former players to the team, but still, there will be a few big names that are missing from the squad.
The star opener, Faf Du Plessis, is not in the team. It will be interesting to see who opens with Gaikwad. Moeen Ali hasn’t joined the squad yet due to some delay in his visa. The star pacer and their most bankable bowler, Deepak Chahar, is injured. That is a big setback. What options do they have now?
Devon Conway might open with Gaikwad and Robin Uthappa at No. 3. The middle order will have the likes of Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni, and skipper Ravindra Jadeja. Dwayne Bravo and Shivam Dube will be the first-choice all-rounders. The bowling department will consist of Santner, Chris Jordan and Deshpande.

Kolkata Knight Riders
The two-time champions were just one step away from winning their third title last season. But it didn’t happen. But a new season will give us a new opportunity. The team will have a new captain leading the charge. KKR is also a team that retained their core players ahead of the auction. And with an in-form captain, their chances this season have increased a bit more.
All-rounder Venkatesh Iyer has also been phenomenal for KKR, and Rahane at the top will also provide them with the stability they require. Nitish Rana and Billings will be part of the middle order. Russell, Nabi, and Narine will be the all-rounders in the team. The bowlers will be Tim Southee, Varun Chakravarthy, and Umesh Yadav.
Aaron Finch and Pat Cummins are yet to join the team, as they are part of the Pakistan tour. All in all, they have got the squad they wanted. So it will be a nail-bitter of a contest.

CSK vs KKR Head to Head stats
Both teams have faced a total of 26 matches in IPL history. And CSK has been the best team among both. The Yellow Army has won 17 matches in total, as compared to KKR’s eight wins, while one match ended with no result. However, in the last five matches between the two, CSK has won four, including all three last season.
IPL 2022: Pitch Report
The pitch at Wankhede Stadium is a dream come true for the batsmen. They can trust the bounce, and with shorter boundaries, it will be more difficult for the bowlers to contain them. The dew might also be a factor in the second innings. It will be hard for the bowlers to grip the ball, and that will help more the batters.
CSK vs KKR: Players to watch out for
Ruturaj Gaikwad is in the form of his life. The right-hander was the “Orange Cap” holder from last season. And he also performed exceedingly well in the Syed Mustaq Ali Trophy 2021. He is the best batter on the team. Gaikwad has played 22 matches for CSK and scored 839 runs in the IPL.
Shreyas Iyer has been phenomenal since his comeback to the team after injury. He was the “Man of the Series” in the last T20I series against Sri Lanka. And in the test series as well, he showed his skill-set, which shows his versatility. With the added responsibility of the leadership, Iyer can perform much better. He will be the player to watch out for from KKR.
