West Indies made history by becoming the first ever team to lift the ODI World Cup in 1975. They were unstoppable in the 1970s and 1990s. Although the standard of cricket in this country has declined in the last decade or so. But still, they are among the most successful teams in the history of the game.
West Indies have won a total of five ICC titles in their history, which is the joint-second most in this game. They have won all three major ICC titles, including the ODI World Cup twice, the T20 World Cup twice, and the Champions Trophy. 1. 1975 ODI World Cup
West Indies were the first team to win the ODI World Cup back in 1975. They were the most dominant team in that era. In the inaugural season, the West Indies and Australia qualified for the finals. Batting first, the West Indies made 291/8, and skipper Clive Lloyd scored 102 off 85. Australia also tried hard but only scored 274 runs and lost the game by 17 runs. The Caribbean team became the inaugural season winner.
2. 1979 ODI World Cup
The Men in Mahroon reached their second successive final of the 1979 ODI World Cup and successfully defended it as well. They faced England in the final of the tournament at Lord’s. The West Indies were undefeated in the tournament and played in a similar fashion. They made 286/9 in 50 overs and restricted England to just 194 runs to win the second successive ODI World Cup by 92 runs.
3. 2004 Champions Trophy
It took West Indies 25 years to win their third ICC title. They did it in the 2004 Champion Trophy in England at the Oval. They played the final against the hosts. It was England that batted first and made 217 runs in 49.4 overs. West Indies also struggled in their chase and kept losing wickets. They reached the target in 48.5 overs and made 218/8 to win their maiden title by two wickets.
4. 2012 T20 World Cup
West Indies won their maiden T20 World Cup in 2012 in Sri Lanka. The hosts also qualified for the final, which took place in Colombo (RPS). In the first inning, West Indies only scored 137/6 in 20 overs. It was a below-par score, but West Indies bowled well. They dismissed Sri Lanka for 101 runs in 18.4 overs to win by 36 runs and create history.
5. 2016 T20 World Cup
West Indies won both T20 World titles under the captaincy of Darren Sammy. Their second win came in 2016 in India. They faced England in the final, which took place at the Eden Gardens. Batting first, England made 155/9 in 20 overs. West Indies needed 19 runs off the last over, and Carlos Brathwaite smashed four consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes to win his team their second T20 World Title.
