ICC Trophies Won by Pakistan

Pakistan was only the second Asian country to make its debut in the game of cricket. They played their first ever match against arch-rival India in 1952, after the partition. From there on, the journey of this country started, and they achieved some good success over the course of time. Pakistan won their first ICC event in 1992.

Imran Khan led his country to a World Cup win. Then, they also won the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy. Apart from winning, this team also played a number of finals in ICC events. Hence, we will talk here about all ICC tournaments won by the Men in Green in history.

1. 1992 ODI World Cup

After playing in the semi-finals of the 1979, 1983, and 1987 World Cups, Pakistan finally got their hands on the trophy in 1992. Legendary all-rounder Imran Khan took this team to glory. Pakistan faced England in the final of the tournament at the MCG. Batting first, the Men in Green posted a decent total of 249/6 in 50 overs. Skipper Imran Khan made 72 runs.

However, England didn’t have a great batting performance. They only reached 227 and got dismissed for just 49.2 overs. Wasim Akram and Mushtaq Ahmed took three wickets each. As a result, Pakistan became only the second Asian team after India to win the ODI World Cup.

2. 2009 T20 World Cup

Pakistan has always been a top-ranked T20 side, or one can say that T20 cricket is their fortress. The Men in Green have always been a tough side to beat in the shorter format. They were unlucky to finish as runners-up in the 2007 T20 World Cup. But in the very next edition, in 2009, they went on to become the world champions under Younis Khan.

The 2009 T20 WC took place in England. Pakistan faced Sri Lanka in the final at Lord’s. Batting first, Sri Lanka posted a below-par total of 138/6 in their first inning. Abdul Razzaq took 3/20 in the first inning. Chasing the target, Shahid Afridi smashed an unbeaten 54 to seal the deal. They made 139/2 in 18.4 overs to win their maiden T20 World Cup title.

3. 2017 Champions Trophy

Pakistan won their third ICC tournament in 2017 when Sarfaraz Ahmed led his country to success. They faced India in the group stage and lost, and then again faced Team India in the final as well. But the second result was totally different. Batting first, Pakistan went on to score a massive total of 338/4 in 50 overs. Fakhar Zaman scored a brilliant century and made 114 runs.

Chasing the target, India lost Rohit Sharma (0), Virat Kohli (5), and MS Dhoni (4) cheaply. They were at 72/6. In the end, the whole team got dismissed for just 158 runs in 30.3 overs, and Pakistan won the final by a massive margin of 180 runs to win their maiden Champions Trophy and this ICC event.
