England was the first team to introduce the game of cricket to the world. However, it took England more than a century to win their first major ICC tournaments. But now they are among the best teams in all three formats. England is a strong team in the white-ball format, while in test cricket, they have just become unstoppable with Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.
So far, the English team has won three ICC events. They won their maiden ICC title in 2010 when Paul Collingwood led them to win the T20 World Cup. Then, Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler also led this team to world titles. In this article, we will discuss the ICC events won by England so far.
List of ICC Trophies won by England
No. | Year | Title | Opponent |
1 | 2010 | T20 World Cup | Australia |
2 | 2019 | ODI World Cup | New Zealand |
3 | 2023 | T20 World Cup | Pakistan |
1. 2010 T20 World Cup
England won their first ICC title in 2010. They won the third edition of the T20 World Cup, which took place in the West Indies. Paul Collingwood led the team to glory. They faced Australia in the final of the tournament in Bridgetown. Batting first, the Aussies made 147/6 in 20 overs. The English bowlers bowled a very tight line to restrict them.
In reply, Craig Kieswetter gave the team a flying start to the chase. He made 63 off 49 to help his team get over the line. Kevin Pietersen also played a decent inning of 47 off 31. England made 148/3 and made history. This was the first time that England became the world champion.
2. 2019 ODI World Cup
After an early exit from the group stage of the 2015 ODI World Cup, Eoin Morgan took charge of the captaincy. That was the moment everything changed in England. They adapted the aggressive approach and became the dangerous side. The result came in 2019, when England won their maiden ODI World Cup at home. They faced New Zealand in the final at Lord’s.
The game went down to the wire, and it ended in a tie. Both teams made 241 runs. New Zealand made 241/8. Chasing the target, England got dismissed for 241 runs, with Ben Stokes scoring 84 not out from 98 balls. Not just the game, but the superover was also tied, and both teams scored 15 runs each. But because England had hit more boundaries, they were awarded the win. Thus, Morgan became the first captain to lead the country to an ODI WC win.
3. 2023 T20 World Cup
Eoin Morgan retired from cricket in 2022, and Jos Buttler became the next white-ball captain. And he started his captaincy tenure in a grand manner. England won the 2023 T20 World Cup in Australia under his captaincy. England played really good cricket throughout the tournament and played the final against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Pakistan struggled in the first inning and managed a below-par score of 137/8 in 20 overs. In reply, England also struggled, but Ben Stokes scored an unbeaten half-century to take his team home. He made 52 not out off 49, and England made 138/5 in 19 overs. England won the second World T20 title and became the second team to win two T20 World Cups.
