ODI cricket: Scoring a century for his country at international level is always a great sight for any batsman. And playing a match is also a pleasing sight for the batter. But some batsmen have made it more special when they went on to play 100 or more matches for their country and score a century in their 100th game of their career.
Scoring a century is not easy, but the most difficult task is to do it on some special occasion. Most recently, the West Indies opener, Shai Hope, did this amazing feat in an ODI match against India. He became the 10th batter overall to score a century in his 100th ODI game. So do you know who the other nine are? Let’s check this article.
3. Yousuf Youhana (129 runs) against Sri Lanka at Sharjah
Only the third batter to achieve this feat was former Pakistan legendary batter Yousuf Youhana (Mohammad Yousuf). He played his 100th ODI match against Sri Lanka at Sharjah, which was the final of a tri-series between Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand. After winning the toss, Pakistan chose to bat first. Opener Imran Nazir scored 63 runs to give his team a good start. But it was Mohammad Yousuf who changed the game.
He registered a century and it was his 100th ODI match of his career to become the only third batter to do so. He made 129 runs off 131 balls with eight fours and three maximums. Pakistan made 295/6 in their 50 overs. In reply, Sri Lanka played badly and got all out for 78 runs. Pakistan won that match by 217 runs, and Yousuf was the “Man of the Match”.
2. Chris Cairns (115 runs) against India at Christchurch
Chris Cairns became the only second batter to register this feat in 1999 against India. It was the fifth ODI of the five-match series at Christchurch. India won the toss and asked New Zealand to bat first. The Black Caps lost two early wickets, but after that they had three 60+ run partnerships. New Zealand scored 300/8 in their 50 overs. Bryan Young (57) and Roger Twose (63) scored fifty each.
But Cairns, who was playing his 100th ODI match, smashed a century. He made 115 runs off just 80 balls, with 7 fours and 7 sixes in his innings. In reply, India had a good start and were 158/3 at one stage. But then, they lost their next seven wickets for just 72 runs and got all out for 230 runs. New Zealand won the match by 70 runs, and Chris Cairns won the “Man of the Match”.
1. Gordon Greenidge (102* runs) against Pakistan (First player in ODI)
The first ever player to register this record was the former West Indian skipper, Gordon Greenidge. It was the second match of the Champions Trophy in 1988 between Pakistan and West Indies at Sharjah. The Caribbean team won the toss and chose to bat second. Pakistan had a really good start and their top three batters scored fifty each. The scorer was Skipper Javed Miandad, who scored 79 runs. The Men in Green scored 294/6 in their 50 overs.
In reply, West Indies had a horrible start with their top three batters getting out for 24 runs. Greenidge, on the other hand, was looking good.He kept on scoring runs and reached his century in his 100th ODI game to become the first player to do that. But the Caribbean team only scored 210/5 and lost the match by 84 runs. Greenidge scored an unbeaten 102 runs.
