3. South Africa (196 runs) vs Australia in March 2006
Australia conceded their third biggest losing margin against South Africa in March 2003. They toured South Africa for a five-match ODI series, and it came in the second ODI in Cape Town. After winning the toss, South Africa chose to bat first. They didn’t have a great start but despite that reached a competitive target of 289/7 in first inning. Herschelle Gibbs (66) and Justin Kemp (51) scored half-centuries.
Chasing the target, Australia lost their top four wickets for just four runs in 9.3 overs. And after that, they couldn’t recover from that position. The whole team got dismissed in 34.3 overs for a score of 93 runs. Shane Watson (27) was the highest scorer. South Africa won that game by a big margin of 196 runs.
2. New Zealand (206 runs) vs Australia in January 1986
New Zealand registered the second biggest win margin against the Australia team in the ODI cricket. They did it in the Benson & Hedges World Series Cup in Australia. It was the 12th game of the tournament at the Adelaide Oval. After winning the toss, New Zealand chose to bat first. They had some decent contributions in the middle. With half-centuries from Bruce Edgar (61) and John Wright (61), New Zealand reached a total of 276/7.
It was a big total to chase those days. Australia required a good start from their top order. But their batting totaly failed. Wayne Phillips (22) and David Boon (10) scored in double digits. Their whole team got all out for just 70 runs in 26.3 overs. As a result, Australia got dismissed for just 70 runs in 26.3 overs and lost the game by 206 runs.
1. England (242 runs) vs Australia in June 2018
The biggest ODI loss for the five-time World champions came at the hands of archrivals England in Nottingham. It was the third game of the five-match series in June 2018. After winning the toss, England batted first. They had a dream start with a 159-run opening stand in 19.3 overs. Jason Roy scored 82 off 61, while Jonny Bairstow smashed a 92-ball 139 runs. After him, Alex Hales and Eoin Morgan took charge.
Hales made 147 off 92, while Morgan slammed a 30-ball 67. As a result, England went on to score the second-highest ODI total in history. They made 481/6 in 50 overs. Chasing a record-target, Australia tried hard, and a few batters got starts. But none of them could make a big score. Australia got dismissed for 239 runs in 37 overs and lost the game by 242 runs.
