T20 cricket is the game of boundaries and sixes. In a span of 20 overs, a team puts everything on the line to achieve as many runs as possible. That is one of the reasons that it is the most popular format among fans. And in the history of the T20 World Cup, we have seen many extraordinary performances from teams and players as well. Because scoring runs always puts pressure on the opposition team.
That is why every team looks to bat first and score the maximum number of runs. Interestingly, there are many instances when we have seen a few teams posting massive scores that looks impossible. So in this article, we will see highest ever total score by a team in T20 World Cup history.
3. South Africa (229/4) against England in the 2016 World Cup
There is an interesting fact about the third and second highest totals scored in the T20 World Cup. And that is that both scores came in the same match. This was the 18th match of the 2016 World Cup. After winning the toss, the English team elected to bowl first at Wankhede. Both South African openers gave their teams a dream start. They added 96 runs for the first wicket in just 8 overs. Hashim Amla made 58 off 31 balls, including seven fours and three sixes.
Quinton de Kock smashed 52 off just 24 balls, including seven boundaries and three maximums. However, South Africa lost three wickets in the middle after a good start. But in the end, a cameo from JP Duminy and David Miller helped them to post a huge total of 229/4. Miller was unbeaten on 28 off 12 and Duminy was not out on 54* off 28. But in the end, the English batters played in a similar way and chased down the target in the very last over, and South Africa lost that match despite scoring a huge total.
2. England (230/8) against South Africa in the 2016 World Cup
The pitch at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is a dream paradise for the batsmen. That’s what happened in the 18th fixture of the 2016 World Cup. As you have read above, South Africa posted 229 runs in their 20 overs. With no other options, the English batter came out all guns blazing. Despite losing wickets in the middle, England kept the run rate under control and scored 90 runs in the first six overs.
Joe Root was anchoring the innings really well, and other batters were coming in and taking on the bowlers. A cameo at the top by Jason Roy of 43 off 16 balls and an incredible innings by Joe Root sealed the deal for England. Root made 83 off 44 balls, including six fours and four boundaries, and won the “Man of the Match” award.
1. Sri Lanka (260/6) against Kenya in the 2007 World Cup
The highest total in a World Cup and the fourth highest overall was made by Sri Lanka against Kenya in the 2007 World Cup. This was the 8th match of the first edition in Johannesburg. After winning the toss, Kenya elected to bowl first. Sri Lanka lost Upal Tharanga early, but Sanath Jayasuriya was going really well at the other end. He got help from Kumar Sanagakkara (30) and Mahela Jayawardene (65).
Sri Lanka posted a mammoth total of 260/6 in their 20 overs with two partnerships of 75 and 87 runs for the second and third wickets. This was the biggest surprise at the time that a team could even score over 250 runs in 20 overs. Jayarsuriya was the top scorer with 88 runs. Chasing the target, Kenya just looked like a club level team and were bowled out for 88. Sri Lanka won that match by a massive 172 runs.
