A partnership is always useful to make big scores for a batting team. Especially in T20 cricket, a good partnership can win you matches. When both the batters are aggressive in the partnership, it is difficult for the bowlers to stop the flow of runs. With the next edition of the Caribbean Premier League to start on August 30, we will see some exciting games.
The CPL started in 2013, and since then, it has given the fans many memorable moments. With the many power-hitters in the tournament, fans always get treated to sixes and boundaries. And in this article, we will cover the list of the highest partnerships in the history of CPL.
3. Kennar Lewis and Andre Russell (161 runs) against TKR
After losing five wickets early, the expectations from the lower order batters are not that high. But this partnership denies that statement. It was the third match of the 2018 season between Trinbago Knight Riders and Jamaica Tallawahs. Jamaica won the toss and elected to bowl first. But that didn’t turn out to be the right decision. TKR batted well, with some useful contributions in the middle. They posted a big total of 223/6 in their 20 overs. Brendon McCullum made 56 off 27, while Colin Munro scored 61 off 42. Chasing a big target, Jamaica lost their first five wickets for just 41 runs in 6.1 overs.
And it was almost over for them. But then came an incredible partnership between Kennar Lewis and Andre Russell for the 6th wicket. Both batters added 161 runs to take their team near the target. It was a carnage from Russell, who scored an unbeaten 121 off 49 balls with 6 fours and 13 sixes, and Lewis made 51 runs. Jamaica chased down the target in 19.3 overs and won by four wickets. Apart from century, Russell also took a hat-trick in the first innings.
2. Orlando Peters and Marlon Samuels (161* runs) against Antigua Hawksbill
The second highest partnership came in the 2014 edition in the 22nd match between Guyana Amazaon Warriors and Antigua Hawksbill. After winning the toss, Antigua chose to bowl first. Guyana scored 212/5 in 20 overs. Martin Guptill scored 90 runs, while skipper Denesh Ramdin made 51 runs. In reply, Antigua lost their first three wickets for just 32 runs, and it was very hard to bounce back from that position.
But after that they had a big unbeaten partnership of 161 runs for the fourth wicket. Orlando Peters was not out on 67 off 45 balls with four fours and five sixes. Skipper Marlon Samuels scored a brilliant century and made 106* off 52 balls with 10 fours and 8 sixes. But unfortunately, they were not able to help their team chase down the target and made 193/3 in 20 overs.
1. Chris Gayle and Chadwick Walton (162 runs) (Highest in CPL)
Chris Gayle is a run-machine when it comes to CPL, and he features in the highest partnership for CPL. It came in the 2019 edition in a match between St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Jamaica c. After winning the toss, the Patriots chose to bowl first. But the Jamaica Tallawahs had some destructive plans of their own. Gayle was in a different mood. Despite losing the first wicket early, the Tallawahs made a huge score.
Gayle, along with Chadwick Walton, added 162 runs for the second wicket to help his team reach a massive score of 241/4 in their 20 overs. Walton made 73 off 36 balls with 3 fours and 8 sixes. Gayle made a century and scored 116 off 62 balls with 7 fours and 10 sixes. Unfortunately, they were not able to defend the target. The Patriots chased down the target in 18.5 overs and made 242/6.
