India is undoubtedly one of the best teams in the game of cricket. That is why they are one of three teams that have won all the ICC trophies (ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy) in the history of the game. One of the prime reasons for India’s success in the history of the game is the strength of its batting line-up.
India has produced some of the greatest batsmen of all time, and they still have some modern-day greats in their ranks. That is why India is always considered a batting-heavy team. That’s the reason that India holds almost all the batting records.
But in this article, we will discuss the highest score by an Indian batter in ODI cricket.
4. Rohit Sharma (209 runs) against Australia at Bengaluru
If it is about scoring big runs, then certainly Rohit Sharma is at the top. The man has three double centuries in ODI cricket, which is more than many cricket-playing nations. His second first-ever double-century is at number three. It was the match against Australia at Bengaluru in November 2013. Australia won the toss and chose to bat first. India had a great start and both openers added 112 runs for the first wicket. Shikhar Dhawan got out after scoring 60 runs, and India lost Virat Kohli for a duck.
After that, India had a few good partnerships, but the big one came for the fifth wicket. Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni added 167 runs to take India past the 370-run mark. Rohit Sharma created history by scoring only the third double hundred by an Indian. He scored 209 runs off 158 balls with 12 fours and 16 maximums, and India made 383/6 in their 50 overs. In reply, Australia also batted well and reached 326 runs, courtesy of James Faulkner (116 off 73) and Glenn Maxwell (60 off 22). And Rohit Sharma scored his first double century.
3. Ishan Kishan (210 runs) against Bangladesh at Chattogram
Ishan Kishan broke the record of fastest double century in ODI on 10 December 2022 against Bangladesh. Ishan Kishan played with Shikhar Dhawan as opening batsman and went on to brake this record with Virat Kohli who also become second player to score maximum hundred in International Cricket.
2. Virender Sehwag (219 runs) against West Indies at Indore
Sachin Tendulkar was the first player on the planet to score a double century in ODI. But do you know who broke his record? It was none other than Virender Sehwag, and he is second on the list. In a match against West Indies at Indore, he made his maiden double century. After winning the toss, India elected to bat first. The Men in Blue had a dream and started adding two consecutive 150+ run partnerships for the first and second wicket.
Gautam Gambhir scored 67 runs and Suresh Raina made 55 runs. But the storm came from the bat of Virender Sehwag. The right-hander smashed his maiden double century to help India cross the 400-run mark. India made 418/5 in 50 overs while Sehwag scored 219 runs off 149 balls with 25 fours and 7 maximums. That was only the second century and highest score at that time. In reply, West Indies got all out for 265 runs and lost the match by 153 runs.
1. Rohit Sharma (264 runs) against Sri Lanka (Overall highest score by a batter in ODI)
A team scoring 260 runs in an ODI match is a decent total. But can you think that a batter alone has scored 264 runs in an inning? Rohit Sharma played this incredible innings to top all batting records. It was the fourth ODI match of the five-match series between India and Sri Lanka in Kolkata. Batting first, India broke all the records, largely due to Rohit Sharma. He single-handedly helped India cross the 400-run mark. India made 404/5 in 50 overs.
But Rohit achieved an incredible feat in the game. He became the first player to cross the 250+ run mark in an ODI inning. Rohit played a mammoth innings of 264 runs off 173 balls, with 33 fours and 9 sixes. It is still the highest score by any batter and is almost unbreakable. Chasing this huge target, Sri Lanka got all out for 251 runs and lost the match by 153 runs.
