4. Robin Smith (167* runs) against Australia at Birmingham
The fourth highest individual score for England came on a losing course too, in 1993. It was the second ODI match between Australia and England at Birmingham in the three-match series. After winning the toss, Australia chose to bowl first. England had a bad start, losing the first three wickets for just 55 runs. But a 142-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Graham Thorpe (36) and Robin Smith helped their team reach 277/5 runs in 50 overs.
Robin went on to score the highest ever score by an English man, which remained on top for 23 years. He made an unbeaten 167* runs off 163 balls, with 17 fours and three maximums. However, England couldn’t defend that title and Australia made 280/4 in 53.5 overs (it was a 55-over match). For Australia, Mark Waugh made 113 runs.
3. Alex Hales (171 runs) against Pakistan at Nottingham
The record of Robin Smith was broken in 2016 by Alex Hales to top the chart. It was the third game of the three-match ODI series at Nottingham. After winning the toss, England decided to bat first. They lost their first wicket early. But after that they had two big partnerships, which led England to register the third highest score ever in an ODI. The English team made 444/3 in their 50 overs. Joe Root (85), Jos Buttler (90* off 51), and Eoin Morgan (57* off 27) contributed well.
But the real big innings came from the bat of Alex Hales. He smashed 171 runs off 122 balls with 22 fours and four sixes to register the highest score by an Englishman at that time. In reply, Pakistan were bowled out for 275 runs, losing the match by 169 runs. Hales won the “Man of the Match” for his innings.
2. Jason Roy (180 runs) against Australia (Highest for England in ODI)
However, the knock of 171 runs by Alex Hales remained at the top for two years only. Because Jason Roy went on to become the highest individual scorer for England in 2018 against Australia. It was the first game of the five-match series. England won the toss and decided to bowl first. Australia lost a quick wicket in the middle, but a century from Aaron Finch helped the team reach 304/8 runs in their 50 overs.
Finch made 107 runs, while Mitchell Marsh (50) and Marcus Stoinis (60) also contributed. It was a competitive total to chase, but England chased it down in 48.4 overs and made 308/5 to win by five wickets. It was largely due to a 221-run partnership between Joe Root (91* runs) and Jason Roy for the third wicket. Roy hit a big century and registered the highest individual score for his country. He made 180 runs off 151 balls with 16 fours and 5 maximums.
